Looking for recs for a versatile and easy to maintain shotgun. Have been looking at the Mossberg 500 as that is what my hunting buddy uses but open to other suggestions.

Slugs or buckshot?

Mossberg would be fine.

I’d likely choose a Benelli Nova.

I wouldn’t want one gun to do both, mainly because there’s no need to lug around a 12ga with TSS. I guess a 20ga slug is plenty for deer if you want to go that route. No complaints with my 500, I don’t feel like it’s possible to break one as long as all the parts are in it. Get a couple fridge magnets to hold the action bars in place and it’s a breeze to break down and clean.

Mossberg 940 Pro. Jerry Miculek inspired. Several variations to choose from.

I agree with bbvdd. I bought the benelli supernova near 2 decades ago. It still is my favorite shotgun.
