I’m looking at buying a center console boat and I’m trying to account for everything. How much do y’all spend on insurance, maintenance, storage, etc?

I have a 24' bay boat.. less than 5 years old.. I budget 4K a year in maintenance, insurance and miscellaneous expenses. I don't have a note either. My GPS went out this year.. that was 2200 to replace. If nothing broke (Not happening) It would still be around 1500-2K.

Every couple years you got new batteries, tires/bearings on trailer, etc..

Storage is a wild card.. It can be 5K a year if you want fully enclosed.

Need more information about the boat you plan to purchase. These cost vary greatly on the size of the vessel.

Biggest hidden or unexpected cost I have experienced is spending more on tackle and equipment. Once I had more storage space I had to fill it up.

Well here is the first hidden cost... you will want a bigger boat. 17' is cramped.

Most common used boat you will see in south Louisiana is a 21ft bay boat with a yamaha 150. I would recommend starting there. I would recommend glass unless you will never need reverse if this is your fist boat. This boat will be an easy sell too if you want to get out of it. Right now is a good time to get a boat, maybe the first time in 20 years that the market has gotten soft and the market is good for buyers.

Has it? The new or used market, or both?

Trailer repairs will cost you especially for a double axle, but that's only every 5-7 years or so.

Are you handy? Do you know electrical and basic plumbing? Software?

Can you do an oil change and spark plug change?

If you have to hire someone to fix every little thing it will eat you alive.

Also, if you are buying used you need to be damn honest about repairs and upgrades you plan to make. New seat cushions could be $2000 for example depending on how many. Could be 5x that for a 30 ft boat.

Plenty of 17 ft boats being used.

Keep in mind that often times simpler is better for boats. The more cool gadgets and options a boat has, is just more stuff that can and will break. A small boat of that size shouldn’t be too bad on yearly expenses if you have somewhere to store it. Otherwise storage will be the main expense followed by insurance.

maintenance

New boat or old boat? Yearly maintenance on a new boat/motor isn’t bad. “Maintenance” on a used boat where you have to start replacing items (wiring, batteries, trailer parts, etc…) can get expensive.

If it’s a small boat why not store at the house?

Consider the trailer maintenance also.

I’m looking at a new boat. I just want something for me and the husband to fish in. He has a Tacoma so I’m limited to 17’.

nothing wrong with a 17. Smaller HP will move it quick, handles well, tows well, and gets in a little tighter water. Just have to watch the forecast a little closer.

we have a 16 ft 1994 custom flat and i have had trips where we have caught just as much fish as the bigger bay boats. one of the best fishing trips of my life was in a 17 foot striper bay boat. watch the forecast and you will be good.

I’d recommend a tiller steer outboard, console will eat up all your room and be in the way.

Why do you think that?

I pull a 19ft bay boat with 4Runner which should have same towing ability as the Tacoma. No brakes on the trailer. Its ok to tow and don’t feel unsafe or anything
