Buddy of mine is trying to get rid of his mid-00s Land Cruiser 100 series with 4.7L v8.

120K miles, which is great compared to most I see on the market. Seems to be in decent shape, but I have also heard these get horrific gas mileage and parts are hard to find and expensive to fix, should anything ever go wrong.

For anyone who has or has had one, are are these actually good investments?

My mom had a 1994 model and that thing was a tank. And yes fuel mileage is on par with a 3/4 ton gas burner. Think my parents had it for 13 years without any mechanical issues.

Be pretty handy if you daily it, bought one from a buddy in great shape but still an 18 yr old truck and was always doing little things to it. Sold it back to him and regret it going into a new F150. Yeah they get terrible milage but it will never go out of style and will always feel solid when you drive it. Also get familiar with IH8Mud.com

AS far as investment, it could be if the market stays where its at. Although an 80 series, one just sold for $165000 with 4000 miles on bring a trailer. Land cruisers will always get a premium. Parts are relatively easy to find online cruiserteq.com and slee offroad with quick shipping. Most of the common parts are interchangeable with the tundras those years.

If parts are, in fact, hard to find, I would not even blink.

You'll still be able to get Landcruiser parts relatively easily by the time F150 parts are no longer available.

Sweet. What's he asking?

that is pretty good mileage.

Mileage should be about 13 MPG, so yes.

Parts are not terrible and can be resourced from the ME and Japan. It can be expensive.

I do not know what you mean by investment. If you are looking for an increase in value over time, the 100 series is not old or rare enough IMO. If you want a badass, reliable vehicle and can do most work on your own, then yes, buy it.

Also, get on Ih8mud.com and do some research.

I have an 80 series and two 200 series. I refuse to buy any other platform.

They are the best built trucks. Wife has a 13 lx and it drives better than the f150. Will probably trade the f150 in for something for her and keep the Lx for myself. Back to the point. Buy the 100 series.

I bought a 2001 with 310k miles last year. I have a work truck to go back and forth to work and my wife works from home. I just needed something to cruise around town and haul 3 kids around. So far I've only changed the timing belt and other general maintenance. Thing starts every time, all electronics still work, ac still blows cold. I would imagine one with under 200k miles will be better.

I say pick it up if the price is right and you don't need it to daily drive to work or something. The gas mileage is pretty bad.

I have a Tundra with that engine. The gas mileage is not good, 15-16 and may be worse with a Landcruiser, but the engine is very solid. I've met two people who have 500k+ on their's and I have over 300k on mine. 120k is nothing if the rest of the vehicle is sound.

I have two 100 series cruisers. One I bought with 127k second hand and now has over 392k. It was used in a work capacity in rural S. Texas and worked pretty hard. Never left me stranded. Used it for the past few years to haul around and launch a crawfish boat.

Parts aren't an issue yet, but OEM Toyota components can be pricey. There are places overseas that are able to source these same parts at a relative discount compared to local dealerships. I was able to do most repairs and service myself and that saved money except when I opted to let a shop do work because my wrenching time was limited. However, be aware that alot of shops are not familiar with the nuances of this series and cruiser specific shops can be more expensive for labor sometimes..

I'd usually get between 12 and 16 mpg unless the truck sat idling all day on a work location.

I wouldn't consider it an "investment" but prices for low mileage and well kept examples on the market have sold for higher than anticipated amounts especially on auction sites.

I thoroughly agree that you ought to research via ih8mud.com alot of the information that you seek out. But personally I would not hesitate to buy this truck if you have a good idea how it was used and maintained. 120k is just getting broke in for a 2UZ IMO.

ETA: What make, year and color is this cruiser and has it been in the south all its life?

I have a 2005 LX470 as my daily driver and I just bought a really really nice 2001 LX for my 17-year-old daughter. I have had Land Cruisers since my kids were very small so she is way on board with it.

Yes they burn a lot of gas. But I got the 2001 LX for less than half of what 4Runners are going for so I can buy a lot of gas with that money. Safe and reliable. If the car has documented service records and no rust you are pretty much good to go. Replace the heater tees and verify that the timing belt has been done according to specs and drive drive drive.

I have not had any trouble finding parts. McGeorge Toyota is a good domestic source but the foreign sources are the gold mine. Impex Japan is by far the cheapest but ordering can be a bit of an ordeal. Partsouq somewhere in Dubai or something is only a little more than Impex and ships really quickly.

I do not plan to ever be without mine.

If he would sell it to me for $15K, I'd probably buy it. But I think he wants $22K-ish for it. It's a 2005 or 06.

I think thats outrageous for a 18-19 yr old vehicle, but I guess ppl pay that for them.

2005 and on have the vvti engines with increased horsepower and 5 speed a750 trannys. Super solid drivetrain that should easily last a half million miles.

If it has been maintained and in good rust free condition he will likely have no problems getting what he is asking for it. I paid more than that for both of my 100's but they were both one owner vehicles and had exceptional service records and conditions.

Is it Lexus or Toyota? And what color combination?

How much does he want? Parts are plenty!
I have a modern new one drove to Omaha 12.5 hours each way 85-90 mph got 16.1 and it weighs 6600 lbs. you don’t buy a landy for its gas mileage you buy it for its 500k plus milage.
Seriously what’s he want for it if you don’t want it I’ll take it. Hook me up

96's and 97's are the best year 80's IMO. I also own a 96 but with 234k on the clock. What color is yours? Pics?

Nice. Love to see it and what the auction brings for such a low mileage specimen. Please post up a link before you get the BAT ad going.
