For some but I really can be happy either way but for some reason I just prefer to work from home.

It could be that I'm an app developer and I just don't spend a lot of time work-socializing. We do meet but not generally more than 30 minutes a day. Plus, we're scattered over the country. We meet up in person for a week once a year or so.

I am friendly to people when I go out. I don't generally avoid people. I just prefer not to work in an office around others. We don't get shite done when we do.

I've done both

Worked for about 20 years in an office where I had to get dressed up and commute 45 minutes each way.

I banged office sluuts and did happy hours 3-4 times a week

Now (past 7 years) I've worked from home and dress like a bum daily

Gym shorts, cap , t shirt , gained 45 lbs and my best friend is the dog

I'll take the working from home, BTW I'm about to get off at 1:30 pm since I started working at 5:30 am

Nobody has work relationships anymore.

Kind of lame if the only way you know how to make friends is at a building owned by your employer.
quote:

‘Lunch with the boys’ is dead. No more killing time with the boys while talking about the new hot secretary over lunch.

Most people in offices pre-covid were eating at their desks, leaving the building to be by themselves, or meeting with people they actually cared about.
quote:

Social life and more importantly social skills are vanishing. No more walking down the hall or having a kitchen conversation with others to collaborate unplanned.

This has more to do with the fact that socialization in the cohort you’re referring to was learned as a group of teens sitting in a room together while not saying a word to each other with faces down in smartphones. WFH didn’t do this.
quote:

Most marriages used to be between people who met at work.

This has never been true at any point in history. Not sure where you’re getting that from.

A lot of office romances end in a weird situation where you have to figure out how to continue to be professionals who were having sex but have now broken up for a reason that would have normally caused you to never want to see that person again.
quote:

Work/social events. Ping pong tourneys, trivia, potlucks.

You can easily arrange this with WFH.

No one does though. Wanna know why? Because it’s just a way to cope with having to be in an office 8-12 hours a day. No need for that if you’re not there.
quote:

I could go on and on, but more important than that is what is happening to people that all of a sudden have zero structure:

I’ll give you this one. When you work from home you must create your own structure. You need a dedicated space. You need to groom and get dressed. You need set work hours where your colleagues know they can reach you. You need proper equipment and a desk.

However, what you’re saying isn’t a failing of WFH as a concept…it’s simply people failing to do what’s necessary to WFH. There’s a difference.

It’s crushed the commercial real estate market.

In the next few years, anybody looking for a business district high rise apartment is in luck. In fact, if that becomes a huge surplus it’ll solve the housing price problem.

It sounds like all Work from Home ruined for you is fricking off and not actually getting any work done.

I do miss in-person interaction sometimes and wish I could do a hybrid model, but there are no offices where I live.

Plus, you don't risk death every day commuting to work if you work from home.

I get my in-person interaction at conferences and corporate summits. I am happy with this model.

Thank you.

I didn't accept the job so I can pretend to be your friend. Go get a hobby and make friends with them. Some people really make their whole identity their job.

I may have looked at it differently if I ever worked somewhere with people my age or folks that I had anything in common with, but the majority of people that I've worked with over the years have been much older than me, and are mostly female.

If I was a 20 something year old guy and worked with a bunch of other 20 something year old guys, then maybe I'd consider socializing with co-workers outside of work, but I've never been in that position.

I know you're getting downvoted to all hell, but there are some good points here. I love working from home (going on 10+ years now), but I met both my wife and my best friend when I worked in an office. It was also great grabbing a few drinks with coworkers after work.

Or PortHudsonPlaya.

I think working from home in a hybrid model is working VERY well. Many companies are letting salary folks work like this:
Week 1: 3 days in office 2 work from home
Week 2: 2 days in office 3 work from home
repeat.

That's a damned fine compromise you'll find.
This especially holds true for people who commute more than 30 minutes or so to work.

And the HR/recruiting folks are finding they are able to attract talent from a much wider radius from the home office.
For example, New Orleans area companies can attract talent from Baton Rouge all the way to Gulfport with this kind of model.

Ping pong tourneys and potlucks. I don't know where you worked but stuff like this sucks.

If ping pong table is present it's a stupid grinding "work hard, play hard" culture. And pot lucks at the offices I've been at are usually trash. People bring stupid Casey's breakfast pizza or stuff I wouldnt feed my dog. That's if they bring anything at all. Some people just scavenge and try to get fed for free without bringing anything.

This is such a terrible fricking take

-Time with family (biggest pro)
-no wasted commute time
-saving money on gas
-comfort of my own home
-flexibility to handle emergencies
-more sleep

Are all much more important to me than
-going to lunch (I never did that when I was in the office)
-having work colleagues as friends outside of the office (We have entirely too many friends as it is and do way too much shite on the weekends to have even more friends in the picture)
-Shooting the shite/watercooler talk (frick the shite shooters that would cruise around all day to find an open door to carry on a conversation about nothing terribly important while I'm trying to finish a project)
-Work/social events are more of a pain than enjoyable, we still do them and they are pretty meh
-I'm married so the last one matters zero to me

The "return to office" boomers are the career over everything people who have a shitty home life, no friends, no hobbies, and their entire life revolves around work

How many teams have won championships by practicing virtually and watching game film from home and just showing up for the game?

People don't seem to keep up their hygiene very well when they work from home. On the other hand, it saves gas and mileage on the car.

This is huge.

Also, I bet the dry-cleaning business is hurting compared to 20 years ago.
