Looking at a cheap starter bike. Looking for a road bike that I can take on some trails and light enough to mount to the back of a GX/tacoma .

Came across the Royal Enfield Himalayan. Price is really good. Was looking at used bikes but at the price point I can get a new one with a 3 year warranty.

Not much power but I think they are cool.

Aren't those made in India?

India, the new China.
That's the biggest negative though.
On the flip side they sell 800k bikes a year.

Sit on the bike first, better if you can ride it but dealers probably aren't letting inexperienced riders hop on a new bike.

That bike looks cool but I would suggest a Yamaha or Honda, some of those lower end bikes from Yamaha and Honda hold their value really well and would be good to trade into your second bike when you have a better idea of what you want.

Don't worry about a slow bike, it is so much more fun to drive a slow bike fast than it is to drive a fast bike slow.

If you go based off of looks here, put some more street oriented tires on it to learn on, dual sport tires are not confidence inspiring on the road and learning you want to be able to trust your tires when you are leaned over in a curve. Bike looks cool, I love the style, but the ride is so much more important. For example, I think the Yamaha XSR900 is way more my styling but the MT09, while ugly, feels so much better when riding or even just sitting on it and they have the same bones.

I do like Honda. I'm looking at the 600 size range in Honda.
Can find cheap Shadows too.

Do your due diligence and scour online reviews and videos. As I understand it, some of their models are complete shite, some are ok. None are ever rated high for reliability.

Stick with a used yamaha.

A guy that works for us has one, I know he's had some problems. Like fuel pump or something. Bought brand new from the local dealer and problems started pretty quick after.

Enfield is the bike you get when you want a 1950's bike built today. I love them.

Could be a fun bike for dinking around town, short day rides and getting off-road for some fun.

I take it that is the 411cc single cylinder model since you're talking about mounting it on a Tacoma.

No way in hell I'd want to be on it more than a few hours on the highway with trying to hold speed and the revs being up there to maintain highway speeds with it being a one lunger.

Can't speak on the reliability since the only one I've seen was about a year ago when I was out on my bike and ran into a guy with the 650cc two cylinder model. It reminded me a bit of the old style Triumphs with the way it sounded. The guy had it for about 6 months and he said he loved it, but was just a weekend fair weather type rider.

Don't overlook the Kawasaki Vulcan line. The v-twin models start at 800cc and go up to 1700cc the last time I checked.

I have been on the Nomad model since 99 and the first one was 1500cc's and the 06 model I still have is 1600cc's.

I know quite a few folks with the 800 model and they are bulletproof bikes-------and big enough to load up a bit to hit the road for a long road trip if you see fit to do one.

I would second this, but even throw in Suzuki. I have had plenty of co-workers ask my advice on first motorcycles. I always tell them to go cheap first of all. More people than not think they will love riding on the street. It doesn't take long for them to realize they really don't. Considering this, don't buy new and do not spend a bunch.

I used to tell people to get a used Suzuki Savage. A single cylinder 650 with plenty of power for a starter bike. Ugly as sin, but who really cares. Today, I would say look for a used Honda Rebel 500. That is a really good bike.

I know you want a dual sport, but honestly, I would say get a street bike first. They are cheaper and will let you learn.

Hell, just about any Jap made bike will be a better alternative since they do build very reliable bikes for many years now.

I've always advised first time buyers to seriously consider getting a used bike first. Some are not cut out for it and give up on riding. It is almost a certainty that somewhere along the learning curve the bike will have the shiny stuff get scraped and dented due to conditions a new rider is not familiar with. Better it be a used bike and not a new one in my opinion.

Good starter bike that is easy to sell if/when you decide to step up to something bigger.

Multiple time Moto Julia customer here- a Japanese bike will always be a Jap bike. I have a garage full of Japanese dirtbikes.

Moto Julia sells art.

Yeah, it’s an Indian made Royal Enfield. Who cares? They are great looking and with the low power, you won’t die.

I promise this- promise you….

You can get at any Japanese bike or even a Harley- and more people will want to talk to you about that Himalaya than anything else.

Do it.
