I had no idea. The government is saying "due to lack of visas" and because of ongoing investigations the 21 dudes that were on the ship haven't been allowed to leave. Just leaving them on a derelict ship in the middle of the river for weeks.

Yet 200k per month traipse through the southern border and they don't give a single shite. Nothing suspicious going on here.

They weren’t able to pay the required fee privately to the proper people I guess

Easy money for them as long as there’s power on the ship.

Living on board is probably better than the living conditions of some of the countries that they are from.

As long as they're still getting paid, they're probably happy.

Those guys are used to being stuck on a ship.
They probably work for low wages and if they vanish, it would be a nightmare to replace them.

Probably better on the ship than in detainment hold for several months.

Can play cards, watch stuff on TV, talk on the phone, order pizza..........oh wait.

Eh. As long as that ship isn’t docked it has to have a crew. Most of those foreign crews never get off the boat in port anyway (which is probably why they have a visa problem)

I’m not sure why you don’t understand why people who did not fill out paperwork to be in this country and then subsequently have their very large ship crash into a major bridge causing people to die arent allowed to just go free into our country.

What’s confusing here?

Their shore passes expire 30 days after the ship first berths at a US port. I once worked a ship in the Port of Houston that was deemed unseaworthy, and those guys were stuck on a tiny ship for over 3 months.

I suspect that living conditions on that ship aren't terribly bad.

I agree it still sucks to be stuck there though.

What I still want to know is why did potato head Joe say the US government was paying for the damages rather than the company that owns the ship?

They usually spend 9 months on and 3 months off. Some just spend years on end on board. They get paid the same and live in the same conditions whether the boat is under way or parked under a bridge. That's their lifestyle.

They make good wages for their home economy, especially on a container ship that size.

What’s crappy conditions? The ship is not that old, they probably all have their own air conditioned stateroom. Tbey can get supplies, fuel and water from barges. Most of these ships are nicer and newer than any American commercial ship. They are usually on 6-9 month contracts anyway with not being able to or barely going ashore. Container ships usually run a tight schedule with not much time in port.
