Go run and get your fat shot

New analyses of the longest clinical trial yet of the weight-loss drug Wegovy are shedding light on how quickly it helps people lose weight, how long they sustain that weight loss and how safe the medicine is over four years of use.

quote:

One important question about these blockbuster medicines is how widely – and how long – they’ve been studied. The Select trial, which was funded by Novo Nordisk, showed last year that Wegovy reduced the risk of a heart attack, stroke or heart-related death by 20% in people with existing cardiovascular risk with obesity or who are overweight. It included more than 17,600 people from 41 countries between 2018 and 2021 and followed them for several years.

quote:

Overall, more people on Wegovy decided to stop participating in the trial because of side effects than people who got a placebo: 17% of those on the drug versus 8% on placebo, a result that was previously reported. And the side effects were ones that are widely known with these medicines: mainly gastrointestinal disorders like nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation, which usually affected people in the first few months of the study as the dose of the medicine increased.

The researchers noted that there were no new safety signals seen in the latest analyses. Acute pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, wasn’t seen at a higher rate among those on Wegovy than placebo, although gallbladder disorders like gallstones were: 2.8% for people on Wegovy, compared with 2.3% for people on placebo. Both are included in warnings in the drug’s prescribing information because they’d been seen previously in trials.

Cutting of your balls also reduces your risk of testicular cancer. What's the point of these studies?

I see fewer and fewer people are getting mad at these drugs on the OT. I’ve never understood the hate.

The hate stems from societal stigma around obesity and psychological conditioning to believe obesity is strictly an issue of lacking will power. This has fueled a culture of fat shaming(which actually has made it harder to fight the disease large scale). It’s due to internalization and feeling a certain way about themselves and inadequacies. Then they lash out a spit venom. Very standard projection.

The GLP-1s are accomplishing something that all the fad diets, “move more eat less” campaigns, and societal fat shaming couldn’t accomplish. Broad scale success in fighting the disease of obesity.

Let me put it another way. It is providing more years of life to those that take it. It is improving the quality of life of those that take it. It lowers other risk factors like the linked article discussed. It hurts nobody else, which is amazing considering how triggered so many people get over this.

What is even more amazing is that it appears to help break many addiction chains due to how the reward center in the brain responds. Gambling. Alcoholism. Smoking. Nail biting. And so on.

You would think this is something everyone could get behind, but sadly no. Our society is still largely driven by antiquated thinking.

I think it’s a great thing; giving obese people a chance at turning their life around and helping them live a longer and better quality of life. Is it “cheating”? Somewhat… but I think that’s okay if it kicks starts a healthier lifestyle.

Now the pudgy housewife who wants to lose 10 pounds doesn’t need this drug.

Obese people losing weight improves their cardiovascular health -- doesn't that go without saying?

I’m on Wegovy. It is legit. I have to force myself to eat 1200 calories a day. I am also saving hundreds from eating out. Protein shakes are my new norm.

Interesting video just put up by Glenn Greenwald, talking about this topic, particularly Ozempic.

Author that just wrote a book about these drugs says 47% of Americans want to take them. He says from 1979 to 2000 obesity doubled, and then in the next 20 years it doubled again.
Says that this happens in societies that move from eating regular / whole / raw food that must be prepared each day, to processed foods. Processed foods, he says, interferes with satiety. Talks about a study with rodents where regular food was given and the rodents never gained weight, stopped eating when they were full etc. Then they were given food from a typical American diet and they ate nonstop. When that was taken away, the rodents refused to go back to the normal food until they were starving.

These weight loss drugs impart a feeling of satiety, so people stop eating. He says that mental health concerns do emerge on these drugs. The mechanisms are unclear though. Said there are 12 risks for these drugs that he lays out in his book - one of them is thyroid cancer. It's pretty significant increase in the risk of thyroid cancer among that cohort on these drugs - but thyroid cancer is pretty rare to start with, and incidence of cancer is pretty high when you're obese, so these things have to be balanced against each other.

It does make you lose weight and which in turn is better for your heart but there are no free rides.

Anyone who thinks this is a miracle drug will be sadly disappointed when they find out what it does to bone density and soft tissue.

How many times do we have to see this same exact thing play out

"Miracle weight loss drug, no side effects"

"If you or you're family members have been effected by ozempic, call 1-800..."

Do what you want, it's s free country. But if you believe it's a miracle weight loss pill and there won't be any side effects I have some ocean front property in Nebraska you would be interested in that comes with a bottle of snake oil that'll solve baldness.

Or just bust a hole in the side of the apartment building and drag them out with a crane.

I mean...what do the truly obese have to lose? I think there are far more dire health issues staring them in the face than worrying about bone density loss in 10 years. I lost bone density from obsessive bike racing but I didn't quit riding because of it.

Eta check the fitness board. There's some pretty happy baws over there who have their active life back thanks to this.

These drugs are not a secret potion.

I sit at a computer for work 8-10 hours a day, and have for 25 years, so I gained a bunch of weight slowly without really noticing.

My Dr put me on Saxenda - I walk a loop that's 1.6 miles every day and lift weights 3-5 X a week.

All that plus Saxenda helping with food cravings, I've lost 30 lbs in eight months.

You can't just take these drugs and sit on the couch

correct. You still have to be ready to change your lifestyle but the consistent ongoing weight dropping motivates you mentally as well to keep at it.

I have literally not heard one person say there are no side effects. I have simply heard people say that the risk of side effects beats all the horrific health risks that come with obesity, such as someone dying 15 years ahead of schedule because they have diabetes.
