In February a court required that tourists start being held to the mandatory prison time. I don’t know if it was a correct decision or not by the court, but I do wonder if state department, travel agency if used, and/or the cruise ship (for that one) updated their info. That’s a huge change to enforcement and punishment based on the law without actually changing the existing law. They shouldn’t have had them anyway, but the change from paying a fine to a mandatory 12 prison term would force multiple looks through bags and all compartments. Or just using new bags for trip.
Recent ones seem to have been caught with random checks while leaving. Do they do random checks of bags for stuff like this when tourists enter? You would think catching stuff entering would be more of a concern and have more checks.
Probably have maids or someone go thru bags and tell them who to randomly check on the way out after group has spent their money.

Possessing either a gun or ammunition is prohibited in Turks and Caicos, but tourists were previously able to just pay a fine. That changed in February when a court order required even tourists to potentially face mandatory prison time in addition to paying a fine. The territory's attorney general has said that if a court finds there were exceptional circumstances surrounding the discovery of ammunition, the sentencing judge has discretion to impose a custodial sentence of less than 12 years.

I highly doubt the bags are checked on entry but it’s very, very common for them to be thoroughly search upon exit. They are a scuba and diving haven and they heavily monitor tourists who destroy the local habitats for “souvenirs”.

These guys absolutely deserve to be released and they don't need to spend a decade in prison in a foreign country for this.
But I do find it funny how differently this thread is going, compared to everyone celebrating Brittney Griner being detained in Russia.

I gave you an upvote for the second part of your post.. but re them “deserving” to be released- Nope, they dont “deserve” shite…. that reeks of the entitlement that many here rail against .

Upvote for using humblebrag instead of the stupid “subtle brag.”

I don’t want to have to deal with meals and orders while on vacation. I can’t imagine what it costs with itemized food and alcohol.
Oh, see, we love the restaurants there (I haven't had a bad meal there), but we don't skimp on food or alcohol and it definitely adds up.
I definitely noticed the inflation this year too as opposed to our trip two years ago.

you're going fangs out on this one, 'fogger, relative of yours?
No, maybe it's just hearing the account of these guys being normal dads and facing some real time away from their families for what everyone would soberly agree is a victimless technical crime with no ill intent or ramifications to anyone.
I'm probably more motivated by rebutting the idea that we've got to honor the laws of some resort country and throw up our hands in FAFO fashion than I am the outcome (which I strongly suspect will NOT include these guys doing years in prison)

Really interesting seeing some of the same folks who said we should "let Greiner rot" in this thread begging for this guy to be released
I'll go ahead and say I don't care about ideological consistency here either
Griner crapped on the United States and very likely intentionally tried to sneak drugs into Russia. The reality is that MOST of those being all FAFO with her probably would have supported a reasonable effort to free her and probably were just annoyed by media acting like she was a persecuted saint when she is, in fact, quite unlikable.
Three normal American dudes with kids who made a harmless error fit easily into my personal definition of "Us"
Griner...not as easily, even though deep down I certainly supported her not being in a Russian gulag indefinitely.

We still go out to eat locally. I just don’t want to deal with it every day. Have some local favs we won’t skip, though.
We went last year and it was definitely more expensive than 2 years before. I’m sure it’s higher this year, too.

Im wondering if, when these guys are released from TCI- whether after 12 weeks or 12 years, might they have a case against TSA for failing to detect the ammo when they departed USA ? In our litigious society, i feel like organizations and governments have been sued for less .

We’ve set the bar on what we are willing to give up for citizens being detained for breaking local laws. Could see this happening more often, pay us and we will let them go.

Shitty island anyway. Too remote. Not as cool as many of the other barrier reefs in the area. Go to Roatan Honduras and save yourself the trouble.
I got drunk and caught a spiny lobster by hand after many hours of snorkeling while also catching all the illegal conch I could and made a Caribbean stew.
Place sucks. No surf for all those islands. Y’all can have it.

We can debate if the punishment is deserved or not, but my question is, to what benefit to a poor Caribbean island is paying for the decade-long imprisonment of people who obviously meant no harm or violence?
Is Turks and Caicos really prepared to spend millions of dollars for the incarceration of tourists who were LEAVING the country without having committed acts of violence?
Not even including the potential PR/tourism implications, this seems like an incredibly stupid and ill thought out plan.

Jesus, at 5 people caught this is just getting weird. It appears the number of irresponsible gun owners is growing rapidly. Ammo boxes are cheap and plentiful.
