Let's say you make the Trae/Center move...is trading CJ a "must"?

Let's just say you trade BI to Atlanta for Trae/Capella or Ogonkwu...

Is trading CJ + Parts + Picks a must at that point to balance the roster?

You are not starting Trae and CJ together, and assuming you've kept Herb, are you really going to have 30million+ sitting on the bench in CJ?

Can you package CJ and get very good parts that will help you now, that are younger and more versatile?

Or is it better to have that veteran presence and bench scoring until the deadline?

If you add Trae, yes CJ has to go.

Guess we could argue semantics of "very good" but you can get decent parts back, for sure. He's definitely not a negative asset, we could get something useful back.

I doubt CJ would come off the bench, but that’s the only way I’d keep him. And I don’t even like that role for him b/c I want Hawkins taking that role.

CJ might be worse defensively than Trae. They can’t play together. It would be fine in the regular season but playoff time they would get destroyed.

If Trae comes in Herb has to stay and start. Trey needs to start.
Could look to send CJ to the Nets for a S&T for Claxton. They still have Simmons contract to use to trade for Mitchell, or simply expire and then make whatever signing they want next offseason.

If CJ is the microwave off the bench, you can live with him as a sixth man.

Getting a point and a center means that the number of holes we have to fill drops which means turning CJ into other pieces may not be necessary.

CJ isn’t good by any means, but this isn’t close to true. Trae is horrendous

I wouldn't move CJ just to move him this summer. I think you could wait until the deadline if you don't find a trade you like now. And you don't have to officially bench him to bench him. see JV.

That depends entirely on Gayle Benson and CJ McCollum. CJ off the bench would be a great luxury if he is ok with it. But that is only half the equation. Will we spend the necessary funds in addition to his salary if needed?

If Poole and Curry can play together successfully in the playoffs, it can be done.

Steph Curry is a much better defender than he’s given credit for.
Trae is just too small to be a good defender. It doesn’t mean he can’t play smart off ball defense. CJ’s off ball defense is somehow worse than his on ball defense.

And despite his terrible defense in a terribly put together team, his NetRtg for on/off was right at zero b/c he makes up for it with great offense.
I trust Herb is that much better than Bogdan fricking Bogdanivich that he and the rest of our team can defend well over the course of the game, and situationally he comes out for offense/defense at the end of games, just like Luka and Kyrie do.
Hit big shots in the clutch and the defense will be ok.

Agree, Someone must not watch much of Trae. He does not even try.

I think they take 80 cents on the dollar for cj to move up a few spots and keep 2 first round picks while gaining cap room. Is that realistic?

If dillingham or UConn center are available after 10, take 70 cents.

IMO, unless you get a package worth your while you keep CJ.

CJ wants to win and he has shown he will do what it takes to fit in and win, even changing his game and shot profile to better fit the team. I can guarantee you he would have zero issue coming off the bench as a super 6th man.

Also, bringing him off the bench and showing that we really don’t have to trade him will make teams that want him increase their offers.

His value becomes immense for young teams needing to fill space and veteran leadership.

Think of a FVV for Houston picture.

Yup, but the key is showing other teams we don’t have to trade him at all.

An Ingram trade that keeps us well below the tax line and able to use the MLE and BAE to sign FA’s would do that, or a trade that fills all holes, and then Griff can tell opposing GM’s “Why do I need to trade him? You’ll have to overpay if you want him”

There are a lot of teams who would kill for CJ. The guy is a very talented and professional player. Personally, I’d like to figure out a way to use him.

I’d prefer Gayle just dip into the tax so we can keep him and use him to run the second unit.

Trae
Herb
Trey
Z
Okongwu

CJ
Jose
Dyson
Naji
(Edey?)

Would roll to a top 3/4 seed if everyone is healthy

We wouldn't be in the tax in this scenario....

Trae- 43mil
OO- 14mil

BI- 37mil
Nance- 11mil
EJ- 2mil

We would add +3mil with this not including 15mil left over from 2023 tax line.

The tax increases and you have nearly 20mil in cap space next year.

The following year you either have to dip in the tax for 1 year or could clear 30mil from CJ. + another cap increase.

Yall are overthinking this. We just need to have a competent FO willing to trade picks instead of players and actually follow through. Which probably isn't likely but I sure hope so.

This would work but I think Dyson would go with Nance not EJ.

The more I think about it. This is the exact trade Pels should target. Trae with long defenders like Trey and Herb and great pick and roll guy like Zion makes sense. OO is the active young switchable big that Willie prefers.

Trae is gettable and with other players on the market like Donovan and PG13- it might getting Trae more attainable. The key will be getting a deal done before the draft or close to it.
