Wicked - Official Trailer

I realize this is probably not going to be most of this board's cup of tea, but I am unwell. I am what you might refer to as a Wicked superfan (like in the Broadway and Tour casts' DMs level, among other cringeworthy shite).

Here's hoping at least one other person on here is looking forward to this.

And regarding that other matter... yes, I am.

Looking forward to it. I think they nailed the casting for the big roles and both ladies can carry it vocally without issue.

I loved the stage musical. Hated the book it was based on. They are breaking it up into two films, each one covering one act of the show, which makes sense as the stage show runs over 3 hours. I'm a big fan of Cynthia Erivo. She's a musical theater veteran and an excellent actress. She's definitely got the vocal chops to carry the role. I'm less enthused about Ariana Grande, simply because she's not an accomplished actress and I'm not sure if her breathy style of singing lends itself well to Broadway-style musical numbers. That said, I've heard some clips and was pleasantly surprised. She looks great in the trailer. With the exception of Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum, all of the other major cast members are accomplished singers, so they knocked it out of the park casting-wise.

In the beginning she is. She evolves over the course of the show.

LOL no. The play runs 2 hours and 45 minutes including a 15 minute intermission ( Wicked the musical). The book really sucked and people are not going to want to have to return for part II.

Glinda's big numbers in the musical are much more light and frolicky, with some true soprano moments I think Ariana might be suited for (not sure of her actual range/training). Point being, I think Glinda's music is well-suited for Ariana's particular vocal style. It's much more about physical comedy for Glinda.

Elphaba, by contrast, is notorious for being an exceptionally tough sing (especially 8x a week). Her big numbers are very belt-heavy. People who play that role basically have to live like nuns for the duration of their contracts which is usually 9 months to a year at most. Anything beyond that is almost unmanageable.

The current Broadway Elphaba (and my personal favorite since her Tour run back in 2017-2018, pics below for those not necessarily interested in the discussion) sometimes does Instagram videos of her daily routine which is A LOT of vocal health/PT.

Mary Kate Morrissey - What a 2-Show day looks like

Regarding Michelle Yeoh, my favorite Madame Morribles are extra as frick on stage. She seems to be approaching it much more sinister, which I don't necessarily hate. Will just have to see how it translates on film. But Morrible has no songs. She sings one small line during a moment in Act 1, which is more speak-singy than anything. So unless they are adding new music, vocal ability isn't a concern for this role.

The Wizard does have one song with Elphaba in Act II so I'm curious to see how Goldblum handles it. But out of the whole show, that's the scene I can live without and fast forward thru. Never has been my favorite. It's sonically different from the themes, none of the show's motifs are in it. It's like this throwback to the swingy-40's style that has always been odd and feels misplaced to me.

The book and the show share the following things:

Character names
General concept of Elphaba and Glinda having a hate/love/hate/love relationship.
General concept of the Wizard's motives.

And that's basically it. I've never seen a "based on a book" show be less "based on a book" than Wicked.

If we're seeing it at the same theater, I guess we can work that out.

I understand their will be two movies. I just don't think that is a good idea. I will take someone's word for the fact that the play is very different from the book; that means it could succeed but not if you stretch the material and make people devout their time and money x2. Just make it one movie that is very close to the play. People seemed to have liked it.

Well, 2 and a half hours on stage and 2 and a half hours on film are two very very different things unless you are literally just filming the stage version.
Making a movie version that runs at the same pace, note for note, line for line, Would be awful to watch. It would feel rushed, lacking any and all cinematography/exposition/transitions you expect in a film.

And with Wicked in particular, that has so much going on in the musical (and so much happening that is referenced, implied or they need you to assume... that would be impossible to show on stage), there's a lot they can do to utilize every bit of those two parts without it feeling stretched out.

Also, while still one of Broadway's and Touring top draws 21 years later, far more people will see the film than have seen it on stage and will have no idea what moments in the movie are not on stage.
