The deal says the Jags cover any overages

This is not the worst deal I have ever seen of this sort. When considering they also host UF-UGa there every year, they’re looking at entertainment around the stadium and it keeps Jacksonville as a “major league” professional sports town it’s probably a good deal.

Something else a lot of people aren't considering is that more shade will bring in more money as well.

Even in shaded seats an event there in the hot summer months is brutal. The Jags are almost always an early kickoff on Sundays, so you could have 3-4 home games where its just too hot to take kids or older folks.

Outside of Jags games, now you can actually book other types of events there during the summer without worrying about it as much.

Took my son to the jags/titans game in November last year. It was hotter than hades in that lower bowl.

The word I keep hearing used is a "screen".

I think its a no brainer to just do a retractable roof, maybe its just not feasible without a complete demolition.

Crazy that billionaire NFL owners expect the cities to foot the bill for their toys.

I agree but cities get serious tax revenue from these sporting events. It's a two way street.

What is this UF campus in Jacksonville going to be ? 10,000 graduate students is a lot surprised the jags don’t play more games in London like 2-4 per year

You also have to be realistic about your city. The Jags could probably move to other cities that would be better for them financially. The vast majority of cities have 0 leverage. And a team can stay "in your city" and still move, like the Braves did. They aren't playing in Atlanta anymore.

Chicago was playing that angle hard too but I guess decided to cave in. It makes so much more sense to move out west to the burbs and build a massive sports entertainment complex.

It is like a tinted window for lack of a better way to describe it, but it doesn't completely close the roof. The material is proven to reduce temps inside by like 10-12 degrees. Should be a really good improvement while keeping an open air stadium.

jacksonville seems like a wonderful place to be a 50 year old white country club member that knows a few boat owners

but god damn it is a boring place to visit

Thats a great way to describe it

Lot of stuff to do if you live here (I guess not really if you're the type who has to go to concert every weekend or something) but not much for visitors

That's fair. It is probably a better place to live than to visit for "excitement". The draw is just the beach.

That said, there are plenty of NFL cities that are not exciting. Atalanta blows. Seattle is very mediocre other than some cool scenery. Houston sucks. Foxboro is an hour from Boston. Buffalo?

You clearly missed the "If it's football only then yes" part of the quote and the wlocp and gator bowl fall in the football only category of yearly events.

I don't need a new yorker to explain somewhere I've lived for over 40 years, in case Floridians haven't made that abundantly clear by now.

Jacksonville has gotten dramatically better as a metro area in the last decade,

No, it hasn't. We've just gone deeper into financing our football team and its owner's ambitions. Wayne Weaver didn't hold us hostage like the khan man, but you weren't here for that.

Edit: And we just announced for playing 2 games in London this season, again. Still at 0 regular season EPL games in Jacksonville. It's a very 1 way street around here.

I love when stupid simpletons don't look at location. I have lived in Jacksonville for 13 years and i am not from New Yor.k.

So, you don't think Jacksonville's metro area is btter than it was 10 years ago? Every single metric that exists says you are wrong, but whatever.

Superdome is probably 10 years or less from not being a viable NFL stadium (in their eyes re revenue) unless something changes

If we were getting a new team and looked for the best place to put the stadium it would be....the current location of the Superdome.

We'd have to do another renovation when the time comes for an upgrade. Or move to Tiger Stadium for 2 years and rebuild on the same spot.

I absolutely do not. I'd take pre 95 Jacksonville in heartbeat.

I'm intrigued by these metrics and how the jaguars are responsible for them.

It's not crazy because it keeps happening. Just one time I wish someone would point out that if it is so great why doesn't the team/league just build it. Then they get to keep all the money.

A new stadium won’t make New Orleanians more able to afford it
