1) The interview glossed over his senior year weight without pinning it down exactly. I got the impression the 270-ish weight may have been preseason. And McKinley didn't specify what his weight was as the season went on. So he may have been playing heavier.

If I remember correctly they were talking about him weighing 280. I'm assuming he is listed at 280 somewhere, and Moscona was asking if that was accurate, bc they often aren't. The 273 stuff was brought in here by LSUBoosie. Not sure where that even comes from, but no point in bothering with that moron.

quote:

McKinley acknowledged he was following the advice of his trainer over just doing the plan LSU (Coach Flint?) sent him. I agree with you regarding what you heard... BUT... he didn't elaborate on the difference between his trainer's plan vs LSU's plan. For all we know, he shared LSU's plan with his trainer and they are following much of it and the trainer is supplementing where he feels necessary. This is speculation

I'm not speculating anything. Just simply relayed pretty much exactly what the kid said, and that it sounded a bit concerning. Maybe his trainer is working something similar to the plan, maybe he's not. I'm not one to just speculate, unless it's clear I'm giving my opinion.

quote:

McKinley did imply the trainer is getting him ready, though, so the idea that he is letting himself go and just putting on bad weight doesn't sound consistent with what he said

But that doesn't go well with another quote when he said he doesn't plan to play at 315, and didn't plan to get to that weight, it kind of just happened.

Like I said, I'm not trying to shite on the kid. Not trying to say he will not be good, or that he's anything close to a bust. Just concerns I had with certain statements in the interview.

He was definitely some combination of nervous and/or guarded in some of his answers

I said this in my first post here. I'm not going to judge him based on the other stuff, or how good the interview went. He could have just been nervous.

315lbs! That’s a big weight gain. Said he would like to play at 300 next year.

Sounds like bad weight if he’s trying to shed 15

I am not too concerned. It's May. He's aware that his weight is an issue, and if he's speaking about it in an interview, that means he intends to do something about it. He has plenty of time to work on it and correct it.

He was a monster at the end of last year. He has the opportunity for significant playing time if he gets to work, and if Bo can get him up to speed, he could end up being a big difference maker. If he can become an SEC caliber DT in his freshman year then a lot (not all, but a sizeable chunk) of our concerns about the DT position will be covered.

Guess we'll see what the man is made of.

The Impact Room is owned by Danny Guidry whose father used to own Pete's on Johnston St. in Lafayette. Danny's 56 years old and has always been in shape.

That kid sounded lazy, overweight, unintelligent, and uninformed.

Fat and lazy is an understatement. Sounded like he really care about his weight or the training program.

Meh. Sounds to me like he really trusts his trainer and has probably worked with him daily for a while and the trainer probably knows him a lot better than Flint, where he's deficient strength-wise, etc..I'm sure they took LSU's plan and supplemented it to address where he may have been weaker. I'm sure their goal was to get him as strong as possible to be able to play in his 1st year against 21-year-old, 320 pound SEC OL.

But the diet is key. I doubt he has access to a really good nutrition program. Was probably just eating whatever. When he gets to Baton Rouge at the end of May and gets in the LSU strength and nutrition program for 2 months, then August training camp for a month, shedding 15 pounds will be nothing. In fact, it will probably be hard to ONLY shed 15 pounds. If we want him to play significant snaps, I'd rather him be 315 right now than 280. As long as is really working out really hard and gained a lot of strength and muscle under some fat, he'll be fine. Now, if he wasn't really training hard and just added weight, but not strength, then that would be a concern. But nothing in that interview lead me to believe that's the case.

And I also doubt that goal of wanting to play at 300 just came from him. I'm sure LSU, Flint, Davis all told him that's what they'd like him to play at. Again, assuming he's really been training hard and gained strength and muscle, but just ate bad because he didn't have the resources not to, he should be in a good spot.

Helluva job by Moscona in that interview fwiw btw.

Or he's growing into a man - concentrating on getting stronger and he put on more than expected now he going to shed some to keep his quickness

I saw a recent picture of him and he doesn't look like he has bad weight
