Only three scholarship running backs on team - anyone know if they are looking to add?

To my understanding, with Holly suspended, LSU has only senior Josh Williams, sophomore Kaleb Jackson and freshman Caden Durham as scholarship running backs on their roster now. Am I missing one? How is this not a huge position of need in the portal? Running backs, particularly those who don’t rotate and get fewer touches, are prone to all sorts of injuries, even minor sprains that limit them.

Williams has been a solid back, thanks goodness he came back this year. But Williams would probably be average compared to most other SEC starting backs.

Jackson has beast potential, looking powerful on the few touches he got last year. I could see him starting or, at a minimum splitting reps and a lot more touches.

But it’s not that unusual to see to see running backs get nicked up in games, sometimes two in the same game. Then we would be left with Durham, a talented but unproven player at the SEC level, getting every carry with only walk-ons behind him.

Why all the chatter about defensive tackles, where we at least have a handful of scholarship players, and not running back.

The coaches know better than me, yada yada yada, I wont argue that point, of course they do. Frank Wilson is a smart guy, there has to be some concern with depth there.

I wonder if they know something we don’t know about the Holly case and that they expect him back. It’s not that Holly is some proven top tier sec back, but he would sure add depth and the potential to be a good SEC back.

Its very un-LSU like not to have a top 5 SEC running back. Maybe someone will blossom like Clyde Edwards did his senior year. Jackson is a good candidate for sure.

By LSU standards, we had a mostly average group of backs last year, but we did have decent depth.

I hope they have a plan. If we have even one running back with a camp injury, or legal problem, or grade problem, they will be in a bind.

Scary with just 3, but I love those 3. Hopefully Holly is telling the truth and has charges dismissed. Those 4 are a very, very solid group. Josh being the elder statesmen, ole reliable and the other 3 being serious talents.

First, Holly will return.

Second, we may have multiple RBs in the top 5. And one will be a true freshman. Our RB room is very strong, moreso than in a few years, and back to LSU norms.

Say I'm wrong...

The fact we didnt really go after a portal RB tells me Holly is definitely coming back and before the season starts. Probably just needs to wrap up the other details of his case this summer then he'll be back in August for practice.

4 RBs is plenty

Who would you suggest they sign? It was a horrible group in the portal this year.

I would have rather kept Bradford than any portal RB's, but even 4 is a little light when you don't have a QB that's gonna run for a thousand yards.

Four is a little light, but I'm sure there are a couple players in other positions that could step up in an emergency. Plus, I expect we'll take a little pressure off the run game by using quick screens. Should be effective as Nuss has some zip and can get it out there quick and Lacy can pick up some yards with his legs.

We have had the DA's son on staff this whole time and this the first I'm hearing of it?

RB is the easiest position to convert someone to or throw out a walk on.

I guess they are fine with a walk-on as 5th string RB (Lane I think). Which at face value sounds fine but yeah all it takes is a few nicked ankles and suddenly we’re in a strange situation. Though it wouldn’t be too different from the RB depth in Kelly’s first season

The #s might not show it because Williams will also take many of the carries, but I think Durham and Jackson will prove to be top 5 SEC backs on talent and skill alone.

LSU is going to run more than many think, and that OL is built for that. When listening to Kelly, I 100% believe he's pushing the run game by his quotes on featuring the best position group, the offensive line. That will slow down drives and keep the defense off the field longer. Jackson and Durham are home run hitters. Something like 33 passes to 38 carries per game.

It's not light. We've been scared because of the last 2 years, but that is not the norm. Let's just go to 2020 and 2021 where we didn't have QB that ran much. We used 4 RBs total in 2020 with the 4th RB only getting 5 carries. In 2021, we used 6 RBs, but the 5th and 6th RBs totaled 3 carries. The 4th RB had 16 carries and the 3rd RB had 23 carries. In the run heavy 2017, the #3 RB carried the ball 19 times. Even if you were to take half the carries from Etling and gave them to the #3 and #4 RBs, #3 would have 37 carries and #4 would have 27 carries.

Every year I listed, ran the ball more per game than we did last year.

4 is plenty... but only as long as they stay healthy.

Yeah, I've said something like this a few times and been ratio'ed to frick.

And we did have to convert a safety to RB in 2022. It's sub-optimal.

Correct. Carry numbers from previous seasons:

2021 - TDP 211, Kiner 79, Josh Williams 23.
2020 - TDP 104, Emery 75, Curry 45, Williams 22
2019 - CEH 215, TDP 64, Emery 39, Curry 38
2018 - Brossette 240, CEH 146, Lanard Fournette 12
2017 - Guice 237, Williams 145, Brossette 19
2016 - Guice 183, LF 129, Williams 52
2015 - LF 300, Williams 60, Guice 51

We are fine with 3, better with 4, absolutely do not need 5.

Among starting rbs in the SEC LSU clocks in at 17th with Josh Williams in the SEC for 2024 by this one article cited below ranking returning starters. While I like Josh Willians, I was probably being generous calling him an average sec starting back, he might be below average.

It’s all someone a matter of opinion, I cant say that you are wrong. It does at least look concerning that most all of our rivals have superior starters at rb.

I’m as high on Jackson being good as anyone and can see him and taking over as starter. But if he gets hurt, we anre in a world of hurt ant rb. Almost top SEC teams have 4 and 5 star young running backs too, who knows who will emerge.

I’m a glass half full guy on most things. I’m not trying to diss LSU, most every sec team has a position of relative weakness. I appreciate your optimism in saying LSU had a top running back stable this year, I suspect no one outside LSU thinks that. We do have a good 2025 class shaping up.

Keeping it real, I think this is a shallow, unproven group of runners, a far cry from what we are used to. I sure hope you are right.

And it hurts extra that Etienne is the top ranked back.
