That’s bad advice. Air cooled engines have heat related damage if run too long consecutively. Most standby generator manufacturers recommend not letting run under a load more than 9 hrs then letting them cool down for 1-2 hrs.

This is especially true if you have a Generac. The have a bad rep.

Kohler is the name. Water cooled if you can afford it.

The 100 hour oil change is imperative. Check your oil everyday too. Don’t blindly trust the low oil shutoff.

If it was well-maintained before you bought it, it's fine. If you've kept up maint. on it, it's fine. Just running AC and a refrigerator is a fraction of it's total capable load. You can run a lot more than that unless you're worried about fuel availability. If the gas isn't an issue, live your life. It's why you have a generator.

Generac installer here. Especially if it's one of the smart generators and you have the mobile link app. It will tell you if you have a maintenance concern.

Have a 48kw water cooled unit. 13 years old and never had to do anything except change oil once a year. The extra size and water cooled is the ticket. If that’s too big just buy the smallest water cooled available.

Is the 24 water cooled?

You can run water cooled generators a lot longer since they run at lower rpm compared to air cooled.

Air cooled generators are really not designed to run continuously and need frequent oil changes and frequent rests.

Another happy generac owner I’m sure. Still mad you couldn’t use your vibrator during the last outage.

This is the correct answer AND what is specified in the owners manual for the 22kw.

Ran the same unit for 11 days after Ida. Oil and filter change 5 days in, as I had performed maintenance before the storm. Then changed oil, filter & air filter at the end of the event.

Long story short, I only shut it down once for maintenance. And I ran the house as normal. Generators of all types and sizes like and need a load.

Just be mindful of leaves and vegetation on the ground near the unit. Ours almost started a brush fire on about day 4 or so. Just thoroughly rake everything away.

This can be a somewhat stupid analogy but it helps me with my boat justifying maintenance when it doesn’t seem like it’s been very long. I understand cars are different…but let’s say you drive a car at 60mph then 40 hours is 2400 miles, 60 is 3600 miles, and 100 is 6000 miles.

You better shut it down and check the oil.

It’s been running for roughly 24 hours straight now. Putting as little load on it as we can. Just AC and fridge.

Why are you worried about overloading it? 22kW is a lot of juice and your largest load is your HVAC and only surges the generator on startup. Otherwise the generator will run just fine with load on it and you shouldn't have to change your day to day habits.

As others have said, just check oil level every 24-48 hours after a cooldown and top off if needed. Then change oil and filter every 100 hours.

These newer aircooled units are purposely designed to keep the motor cool with the amount of air being pulled through the enclosure. Just note that the grass on the exhaust side of the generator will get torched. It's advised to have it on concrete or have a heat shield in place.

During ida I would shut mine down every morning for a couple hours. House was cool from the night before. I’d check oil and give it a short break. But I’d shut it down once every 24 hours just to check oil level. Some burn oil. Some don’t

All of this. Generac is an entry level generator and mine performed just fine during Ida. The only people that had problems tried to run them 24/7 without any maintenance

My neighbor has a Generac. During Ida, it ran non stop for 18 days straight, never shut it off for a second. Dude even took the shrouds off it so it'll run cooler (not a good idea).
I have a 20KW Kohler, I run mine for 100hrs, shut it down and change the oil then fire it up. Served me well so far.

I’ve got a portable Generac 10k with an interlock kit on my panel. Plug and go and for the two weeks every ten years I need it, it works just fine. I can run everything in the house except the central AC, just not all at once.
I need this done with my Champion 10k. Any suggestion who, in BR?
