Lords of the Fallen is VERY Souks like in gameplay and the world.

DD2 is how you described it but add a little monster hunter. Personally, I struggled with the first one a decade ago and fast forward to now where I’ve beaten every souls like game and it’s easy to get the groove of.

Also curious about this. Any Dogma alums want to break them down for us?

I'll preface this by saying I put hundreds of hours on multiple accounts into the OG Dragon's Dogma.

Your basic vocations in the original game were all very different but good in their own ways. Then, you had hybrid vocations like the magic archer and assassin.

I was always highly partial to the speed and flexibility of Strider. Close-range powerhouse with daggers and the ability to still put some distance between you and the enemy with the short bow secondary weapons. I would level up towards max level while playing vocations like Warrior that gave great level increase attributes to strength, then I'd carve through much weaker mobs en masse on AP farming missions while I was sorcerer or mage vocations just to unlock their perks as quickly as possible and get back to playing what I considered more "fun" melee classes.

At max level, after all stat increases were attained, I always ended up back as a Strider because damn, it's just so much fun to climb all over big, badass shite with great speed and take them down one weak point at a time while a supporting pawn cast of Sorcerers rained down perpetual showers of Grand Bolide spells.

I will say, if they have brought them back in the second game, take advantage of healing springs. First one you find, bring a bunch of empty flasks with you and fill them up until you can't carry any more, return to town and place them in storage, then repeat until your storage is full. Always bring quite a few along because they heal both your character and your paws simultaneously. If it's like the first game, if your pawns are carrying full flasks of healing water too, they'll use them automatically when your health is critical and it can really save you during more difficult and protracted battles.

If you're more magic oriented, magic archer was a really fun vocation. Just be sure, no matter what vocation you choose, that your main character has in some way the ability to administer both physical and magical damage. Capcom threw a few enemies into the first game that were immune to one or the other and it could really be a pain in the arse to not be able to hurt them if your party setup wasn't right. Also, some of the endgame mobs with ridiculous amounts of health become completely impervious to certain damage types after a certain damage threshold was reached. Be versatile. Most enemies have a glaring weakness you can find and exploit (though not always easily), but some are just incredibly tough and the fight will be a grind.

Also, I must note that size matters. If you create a massive, 7 foot tall muscular character, it will have greater inherent strength and health but will be somewhat lacking in stamina and speed, whereas if you build a smaller, slimmer character they will be incredibly quick with higher stamina but will lack strength and health. It's a balancing act based upon what your future plans for your character are. IMO, don't go big and bulky because there will certainly be some places Capcom throws in where you will just want to run as fast as hell and get through it without dying. You'll appreciate that more in the long run than you will appreciate the health boon given to mountainous characters.

That's all I've got without typing out pages worth of text and boring everyone to death. Really looking forward to this game but need to finish Rebirth before I dive in.

To answer the original question, if it isn't already apparent...

High STR+STA build Strider, magic enchanted weapons as soon as available (or magic-based pawn that can cast weapon enchantments) with active mage/sorc perks to boost weapon enchantment damage.

Am I stupid, or do cyclopses have two full health bars? I picked up my first set of quests after talking in the Capital, and ventured out. Ran across a damn cyclops, skeletons, and hobgoblins and got everyone down, even the cyclops and the a-hole gets another bar after all of that?

The large enemies will have 2-5 health bars that I've seen so far. The dots underneath the bar on the left represent this. It's so you can see the progress you're making on their health. If all that were on one bar you'd never notice as you chipped away.

I didn’t notice that. Thanks. I had to jump back to a tavern save. I guess I’m not ready yet

I went with warrior. It was a toss up between that and thief. I did pick up a mage and an archer.

I went Warrior for a bit but attacks felt too slow. Switched to Thief and it's been incredible.

For the record you can freely switch all the time and your stats adjust so you don't really miss out on anything by switching. And it seems like you get plenty enough discipline points to make it a non issue.

The limiting factor is gold for gear.

Anyone try the vocation with the twin blade that uses magic as well? If I wasn’t a powerful sorcerer I’d use that

There's something to this game. I don't know if it 100% nails what it's going for, but it really grows on you.

I don't dislike the idea of limited/no fast travel, but I'm not sure why the game gives you quests to go halfway across the map, and then you get there, and there's a side quest that makes you go all the way back (unless you google search to skip a step).

I'm not sure I understand the inventory system at all. Are we supposed to all be walking around constantly overburdened?

There's a lot of pointless time wasting (ie. go talk to this NPC who is only available at a specific time of day).

Dragonsplague adds nothing to the game

Yeah, the inventory system does seem off. I’m constantly “heavy” or more. I’m constantly selling things to lighten my weight or sending stuff to my pawns.

I think they are trying to force as much realism as they can in inventory/travel. Food goes bad. If you carry a bunch of rocks you're going to get burdened. If you want to travel to the next city over it's going to take you a few days.

That being said the inventory does get annoying mostly because you're constantly picking things up and then having to constantly shuffle items to pawns. Then there's always the risk of pans yeeting themselves into the Brine with your stuff.
