Went this weekend and it was packed. Surprised us for the location but it obviously still gets a great business. Kind of like the Frank’s on Airline.

Sonny's Mild BBQ sauce and Sweet BBQ sauce are something else. I also like their baby-backs and redneck eggrolls.

I enjoy Sonnys. It’s chain bbq, so don’t expect it to be amazing. It’s never going to be “the best”. But, it’s a good meal at a good price and a comfortable atmosphere.

It's an old building in a dying part of town but I'll be damned if it isn't packed M-F for lunch. The best thing that happened to them was the 2016 flood which allowed them to remodel with insurance money.
It's solid food, not award winning but it has withstood the test of time while many other BBQ joints have come and gone.

I was shocked they put the money in at that location after the flood, but like you said, it's crowded. I'm curious to see how the Gonzales location does. For whatever reason, the Florida Blvd location works.

The sliced pork is amazing.
I miss the pre flood salad bar and vibe of the place. A lot of good meals were had in that dusty dining room.

I think its similar to Podnuh's bbq. Grabbed ribs and a few sides Sunday which were good.

the lunch business at that location is off the charts

There are usually one or two beside the road BBQ places that do a very good job with limited visual appeal.
I had a friend in Jackson years back who knocked the ball out of the park every day. He had a big (huge) smoker under a metal roof beside a Mennonite built storage building and a picnic table under an awning on the opposite side of his hut.
He was printing money and then got throat cancer one day and was dead in six months. HIs rig disappeared. I guess someone bought it and moved it somewhere else, to another empty lot beside a county road.
When I went to his funeral, I thought the body displayed in the casket smelled a little like smoked Pork.

We used to visit Sonny's occasionally when we lived in Jax. We preferred Bono's, but Sonny's was pretty good, too, as far as reasonably priced BBQ joints go.
I think Sonny's is to bbq as Outback is to steak houses. Pretty good, but you can find better bbq out there if you are willing to spend quite a bit more...

MDawg, next time you and Lady MDawg want to road trip for some BBQ head to the new place on Hwy 61 north of Vicksburg. Take the Yazoo exit north and its about 3 miles on the right. That dude is putting out some excellent Q. He's proud of it... but it is good stuff. He started out in a Mennonite building too but keeps adding on to it. It has A/c now I do believe.

A universal truth. You can chisel that one in stone. My Jackson area favorite was the place in Pocahontas in the Indian Tee Pee. I cried when they took it down and built a Dollar General on the lot. They took polaroids of their better customers. Mine was on the wall a foot or two right side of the counter.

Love it. I usually go for the AYCE dry rub ribs, served with multiple sides and Texas toast for like 15 bucks. I do miss the salad bar, though.

The Big Deal was my go to, brisket between the Texas toast & a side of beans
We don’t get it as often as we used to but we always order extra toast so I can make the sandwich

Thanks for the recommendation. We will make a trip over and try it. We actually were in Vicksburg both yesterday and today.
Yesterday we even crossed the bridge into LA and visited my #1 favorite liquor store on earth, on the south side of I-20 at the Delta exit. Nice friendly folks, selling bottled beverages, as many as you want to buy. I think they sell gas, too, but not so sure about that. It is also next door to the closest drive through daiquiri stand to Clinton. I assume from the line usually there, that they make a nice chilly good glass of Daiquiri. We have never tried the place though.
