Used to have a gold. Wasn't worth the annual fee

Same with me, I figured I had to spend at least 15-20k to get enough points in order to re-coupe the yearly fee . Have capital one venture now with $0 fee and same point system as gold card.

Did you factor in interest that you don't have on AMEX?

Well if the yearly fee is $145 you have to spend $14,500 MAX to break even. If you start to include double and triple points realistically you are looking at spending $10,000 to break oven on the annual fee.

I personally think the travel benefits the gold amex offers along with the points makes the card more than worth it.

What does the platinum offer regarding travel benefits that the gold doesnt? They offered me the platinum but I decided I wouldn't make up the $300 difference based on the benefits. May need to rethink that.

To the OP, I think you would be hard pressed to break even on both of the cards in a given year just based on the rewards/annual fees. Granted a lot of the benefits are hard to put a $ amount to.
