After 146 Years of Construction, world's largest Church set to be completed in 2026

The construction primarily uses local stone, such as Montjuïc stone, to create the intricate façades and structural elements.
The interior features a variety of materials, including marble, ceramics, and colorful tiles, contributing to its vibrant aesthetic.
Gaudí incorporated innovative building techniques for his time, such as using reinforced concrete for the basilica's structure, allowing for the creation of complex and daring architectural forms.
The Nativity Façade symbolizes the birth of Jesus Christ, adorned with scenes from his early life and the natural world, reflecting Gaudí's reverence for nature and the divine.
The Passion Façade depicts the suffering and crucifixion of Christ, characterized by stark, angular sculptures and a somber atmosphere, evoking the solemnity of the Easter story.
The Glory Façade, still under construction, will represent the triumph of Christ and the path to salvation, with plans to include imagery of the Last Judgment and the Heavenly Kingdom.
Throughout the basilica, motifs inspired by Christian symbolism, such as vines, grapes, and wheat, are intricately woven into the design, conveying themes of rebirth, sacrifice, and spiritual nourishment.
The basilica's interior is characterized by a forest of towering columns, resembling the trunks of trees, which branch out to support the soaring vaults overhead, creating a sense of organic unity and harmony.
The ceiling is adorned with intricate patterns inspired by natural forms, including stars, flowers, and geometric shapes, which are illuminated by sunlight streaming through the stained glass windows, casting colorful reflections throughout the space.
The basilica's exterior is adorned with countless sculptures and decorative elements, including intricate carvings of biblical figures, saints, and angels, each meticulously crafted to convey emotion and narrative.
Ongoing Construction:
Construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882 under the direction of Antoni Gaudí, who dedicated the latter part of his life to the project until his death in 1926.
Work on the basilica continues to this day, guided by Gaudí's original plans and vision, as well as modern engineering techniques and technologies.
The basilica is expected to be completed by 2026, with ongoing fundraising efforts and construction milestones marking its progress towards completion.

It will never be ready in time

It is an amazing place. I hope someday to go back with someone who would appreciate it.

Oh man what a healthy dose of barsilonian non politics you brought to the PTB.

This is why I hate atheist look at what Christianity has built vs the lifeless square boxes built by them.

I’ve been there before. It really is something to behold.

It's impressive the last time I was there it looked like parts of it needed gone back over. Barcelona is a nice city just beware of pickpockets even in the airport.

The true age of this original glorious Gothic cathedral is at least 500 years old.
The claimed narrative of 1882 is complete and obvious utter bullsh#. This is another Olde World structure, its actual date of construction (like all the others) is un-documented, ergo unknown.

We see the same narratives playing out all the time, whether in North America, Europe (or even Australia.)
The narrative-claimed biographies (Wiki usually) of the alleged designers / master builders of similar amazing structures are often quite similar -- vague, ambiguous, making little sense, with little detail of the work or plans, or any tangible evidence the support anything claimed.

I have been there. It is an incredible sight to see. There are countless spectacular churches in Europe, but sometimes they start to blend together and fall into the seen one seen them all category. Not this one. It is one of the most unique pieces of architecture I have ever seen. I can't wait to go back to see the finished product. They want it to be finished by 2026, the 100th anniversary of the death Gaudi who was killed in an accident during the construction.

I'm heading to Barcelona in about 3 months when my house remodel gets finished.
I will update you with progress as of August/September of this year.

Went there 2 years ago. It was amazing.

La Sagrada Familia
Actually a really good progressive rock song by the Alan Parsons Project from back in the day. That was one of Dad's favorite bands, along with The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd.
Those songs take me back to a time when things made sense. I don't even recognize the world anymore.
Of Dad's music, I definitely connected a lot more with CCR, Doobie Brothers, EW&F, Dire Straits and Jimi/SRV, but that whole couple decades-long era of music was just exemplary.
I got really into 90s alt/rock/metal and just kinda stayed there . But apologies, I digress.

thank you for this - never heard of it before - what an undertaking!!!
didn't know modern man had this kind of inspiration at work.
Makes me feel better about the future.

Barcelona:
Great town for the, Hop-on, Hop-off double decker bus tour. Get off at highlights, stay as long as you wish, then hop back on. Besides Sagrada Familia, it also catches the soccer stadium (FCB) and Las Ramblas.
Also great city for Mike's Bikes tour .. for those highlights that are 1 to 2 miles apart (with a guide).
Men's pants typically have pockets ie a linen pouch that hangs inside the pants (maybe with a button). Jeans, on the other hand, are simply a piece of material sewn on the backside of the pants … much easier for pick pockets. If you wear jeans, wallet / money should go in front pocket (though that is always a good rule).

It is an amazing site to see.
Gaudi knew that he wouldn’t live to see its completion. So he constructed intricate models as guides. Then, during the Spanish Civil War, the church (and those models) were bombed. From that point on, the fragments had to be put back together as puzzle pieces. But then they got stuck. No more progress as some of the models were to destroyed to be put back together.
Soooooo…
We’re then deployed, especially aerospace engineering programs.
Old boy was a century ahead of his time.
Scope this out if time permits.
It’s actually fairly well done imho.

Modern architecture is so ugly compared to structures like this. We need to go back to creating beautiful buildings instead of blocky monstrosities. It should be part of the Broken Windows Theory.
