Want to install a mini split in my garage kitchen area. This room is about 400SF and it's attached to my garage via French doors. I want to install a 24k btu unit to cool that room (lots of windows/west facing) and also be able to open the French doors and knock down the garage temp as well if needed for a party or holiday gathering. I thought about a multi zone but don't know if paying that money is worth it for 2-3x/year we may or may not need it.

I want to do this as DIY as possible but have a neighbor that's a retired HVAC guy that can assist with any particular things like vacuuming the system down and charging it if i don't go with pre-charged lines.

I would like to install one with a ceiling cassette type indoor unit but am open to the wall mounted type as well. Plenty of room in the attic in this area to work above. I also have a 240v circuit in the area that i will be tying to so that helps...

There seems to be a lot of brands these days and prices vary a lot.

Pioneer
Mr Cool
Senville
Blue Ridge
Bosch
Della

I don't need the top of the line, just something that will work

Thoughts/tips/snarky comments welcomed here...

One more you might want to look at, I'm researching the signature solar EG4 12 and 24k mini split kits that run on solar or grid. They have a neat setup, you run solar panel strings directly to it as well as the grid supply. It prioritizes the solar panels and will only draw from the grid what is needed. I'm intending to put this on my barndo great room and will circulate air with the central system fan.

I installed a Frigidaire 24k that heats and cools. Been going for 3 years now. Clean the filters on inside unit about every 3 weeks. Keep the coils clean on outside unit twice a year.
The pain in the arse with these is the squirrel cage blower on the inside unit. It gets gunked up between the blades and can’t blow any air. Where I installed the indoor unit doesn’t allow me to remove the blower so I could take it outside and pressure wash it. I have to clean it with a stiff bottle brush and it is truly aggravating. I do this twice a year. Clean the reservoir.
Other than that, they are great.

We use GREE brand in many of our businesses.

Haven’t had much trouble with them.

Settled on the pioneer 24k BTU with the line set that can be cut to length. I’ll update with the install process.
