Seen a fair number of pre-Nazi era German films.

Only one I think I've seen from the Nazi era is "Ferryman Maria" (1936), which I rather liked.

"Triumph of the Will" (1935) has been easily found for decades and decades. Never bothered to watch it, though. Didn't interest me.

Never have liked films with propagandistic messaging. Probably why I often hated films devoted to social issues. They become soapbox affairs, and I find I can no longer buy into a character or a narrative when I feel I'm being manipulatively preached to. My interest and involvement in a story immediately flatlines. Ditto all the woke stuff nowadays. Not going to waste my time on it.

When I was a kid I saw a clip from this short in 'The World At War':

The idea of the Nazi Comedian has fascinated me ever since.

Just recently I learned the story behind these films:

LINK
quote:

From September 1939 the pair appeared in a number of weekly 2–3 minute short films, which usually accompanied Die Deutsche Wochenschau newsreels or feature films screened in cinema.

Tran was a bald, conniving and dim-witted character whose frequent transgressions would run counter to the German war effort or security. In different episodes Tran would listen to the BBC, refuse to donate his accumulated kitsch scrap metal, or engage in black market activities. His friend Helle—taller, handsome and appearing to be more considered in judgement—served as the foil who would ultimately show his fellow Rhinelander the error of his ways. While Jews were portrayed as untrustworthy, the series lacked the heavy-handed antisemitism found in other German film productions of the Nazi era.

Tran and Helle's shorts were discontinued in the fall of 1940, possibly due to the authorities becoming concerned that audiences could sympathise with the wrong-footed but essentially human Tran, who would on occasions utter ideas contrary to the Nazi regime. Schmitz was a member of the SS from 1 March 1934 and a member of the Nazi Party from May 1937, however he was barred from the German film industry from 1941 "due to unworthy behavior"

I don't think that's a word.

Regardless....

Half of Hollywood's movies must be off your watchlist. Which is probably healthy.

Aww, c'mon now you're selling this country short...

As soon as motion pictures were invented.... People in this country flocked to propaganda films way before the Nazis were even a political party.

The film held the mantle of the highest-grossing film until it was overtaken by Gone with the Wind. Oh, the coincidence.

Yes because she was an idiot and compared being conservative to being a Jew in NAZI Germany. Wake me up when the government starts rounding up conservatives and putting them into camps. Although I’m sure your dumbass thinks that’s possible despite the large amount of conservatives in DC

It’s how propaganda works, it’s not going to be some poorly made film it’ll be good quality. Also the people you’re attacking are going to be demonized to the point that the public don’t see them as human or as less than. Ethnic cleansing 101 there

You are kind of seeing this with how white men are being depicted and described now, correct? And I'm not comparing what the Jews went through to white men, I am talking about the propaganda part of it.

So she deserved to be fired and blackballed for that?

BTW, her costar Pedro Pascal made a very similar nazi comment, but there was not a sacking or even a wrist slap by Disney.
