Well here is the first hidden cost... you will want a bigger boat. 17' is cramped.

Most common used boat you will see in south Louisiana is a 21ft bay boat with a yamaha 150. I would recommend starting there. I would recommend glass unless you will never need reverse if this is your fist boat. This boat will be an easy sell too if you want to get out of it. Right now is a good time to get a boat, maybe the first time in 20 years that the market has gotten soft and the market is good for buyers.

we have a 16 ft 1994 custom flat and i have had trips where we have caught just as much fish as the bigger bay boats. one of the best fishing trips of my life was in a 17 foot striper bay boat. watch the forecast and you will be good.
