Hidden costs of boat ownership

I’m looking at buying a center console boat and I’m trying to account for everything. How much do y’all spend on insurance, maintenance, storage, etc?

I have a 24' bay boat.. less than 5 years old.. I budget 4K a year in maintenance, insurance and miscellaneous expenses. I don't have a note either. My GPS went out this year.. that was 2200 to replace. If nothing broke (Not happening) It would still be around 1500-2K.
Every couple years you got new batteries, tires/bearings on trailer, etc..
Storage is a wild card.. It can be 5K a year if you want fully enclosed.

Need more information about the boat you plan to purchase. These cost vary greatly on the size of the vessel.
Biggest hidden or unexpected cost I have experienced is spending more on tackle and equipment. Once I had more storage space I had to fill it up.

Trailer repairs will cost you especially for a double axle, but that's only every 5-7 years or so.
Are you handy? Do you know electrical and basic plumbing? Software?
Can you do an oil change and spark plug change?
If you have to hire someone to fix every little thing it will eat you alive.
Also, if you are buying used you need to be damn honest about repairs and upgrades you plan to make. New seat cushions could be $2000 for example depending on how many. Could be 5x that for a 30 ft boat.

Plenty of 17 ft boats being used.
Keep in mind that often times simpler is better for boats. The more cool gadgets and options a boat has, is just more stuff that can and will break. A small boat of that size shouldn’t be too bad on yearly expenses if you have somewhere to store it. Otherwise storage will be the main expense followed by insurance.

maintenance
New boat or old boat? Yearly maintenance on a new boat/motor isn’t bad. “Maintenance” on a used boat where you have to start replacing items (wiring, batteries, trailer parts, etc…) can get expensive.
If it’s a small boat why not store at the house?

Consider the trailer maintenance also.

What kind of fishing and/or boating will this boat be used for 90% of the time? Freshwater fishing?
Saltwater? Marsh or open water?
Pleasure cruising?
How many people will normally be aboard?
Answer these questions and you can get better advice here as there are many different types of boats.

Don’t forget property taxes, they get me every year for the boat, motor and trailer; all separate, every year in Arkansas. Look up your State, owning a boat can be expensive….

It’s a LOT
Insurance, Gas, upkeep, note, etc.

A boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into. I should know by now, I have a small fleet and each one is a little bigger and more expensive than the last.

In 2016 I bought 8yo boat that was used in saltwater that had 225 Merc HO Pro XS with ~300 hrs.
The maintenance on the motor is only part of the overall picture. I had plenty of repairs required on the outboard, but also had to do the following: battery replacement, broken power pole, 2x trim motor replacement, trolling motor replacement, jackplate solenoid replacement, trailer work, and probably other non engine stuff I’m forgetting.
I share all that to say the more gadgets and features you have the more maintenance

BOAT
Break

Another
Thousand
My problem is that I don't get to use mine as much as I need to and it's hanging in a lift.
So when I do use it there's always some issue

I have had 6 boats. My favorite was a 14 ft bateau with 25 pull start Merc.
No electrical system, no trolling motor
My second most favorite was the 18 ft Reno skiff, with a 115 Evinrude, simple open layout with front and rear deck.
Simple is better.

Just get the boat and enjoy.

If you are buying a boat and weighing if the cost/benefit is there I would consider buying a boat with a partner or two who fish about as much or less than you. It works well for me.
