The Golden State WNBA expansion team announced Tuesday its name and brand identity: the Golden State Valkyries.

The name, which originates from Norse mythology, refers to a "host of warrior women who are fearless and unwavering -- flying through air and sea alike," a team release said. "This brand is Golden State's modern interpretation of Valkyries: strong, bold, and fierce."

The team's primary color is "Valkyrie Violet," which signifies "power, ambition, nobility, and women's empowerment, much like purple has been used symbolically in modern history," the team said.

I can't believe the WNBA is expanding, but I will at least say that I like the logo.

As long as the NBA is okay with the big losses.

It's hard for me to believe that the nutty SF political activist type that chunky with blue hair and hates all men would want to regularly watch/attend/buy merchandise for women's basketball.

I guess the WNBA doesnt have to release financial info because its not a public company? Would be interesting to see that balance sheet

They’re surely not buying tickets to the Warriors…

I love how the NBA keeps doubling and tripling down on this social justice money pit they’ve created.

Must be nice to flush money down the toilet.

The NBA just keeps pumping money into that thing. With the media push of women's basketball, the NBA will keep doing it. They have the money to lose so it's just whatever at this point.

They don't care. The fans buying nba tickets & merch and the media companies buying the tv rights are gong to pay for it.

They're also expanding to Toronto and chartering flights to the tune of $25 million/year.

For a league that's never made money, they're getting way out over their skis here.

They're not. It's obvious the NBA crowd is not overlapping with the WNBA. Men aren't watching the WNBA.

Also, it cannot be emphasized enough that no matter what your views are on climate change the "chosen ones" will be exempt from whatever restrictions are forced.

I'm sure some activists can cook the books to explain how any social justice cause, no matter the reality, is paramount to reducing carbon emissions.

They should do one of those fun in-arena segments during a media timeout where they ask current WNBA players how to spell the new team name!
