And medically, Knoxville has birmingham beat. Heck, even housing is better and MD Anderson has it all beat when it comes to Cancer care. Baylor Houston is tops in many areas.

No, Knoxville doesn’t sniff Birmingham. Birmingham is a top tier medical center in the South. Nashville and Houston are the only two places probably clearly better in the entire Southeast.

Just FYI, one of the best pediatric specialty surgeons - potentially THE best - in all of Alabama is an African-American dude based out of Children’s’ (Peds ENT, Dr. Smith).

I appreciate the heads up. I hope we never need him !

Birmingham is a little bit of a shite hole.

There are very specific areas that people who look like me have no business being. If I, and people like me, stay out of those areas, BHM is perfectly fine.

I was just in Birmingham. We stopped there on our way to Pigeon Forge, TN. I would stop there again. Had a pleasant experience.

Historically, Ensley was a really good high school.

It is closed and demolished now.

I live in a safe neighborhood. I still lock the doors when I leave the house, and truthfully keep the front door locked when I’m home.

To me it’s just common sense.

UAB. Why do so many athletes choose BHM for surgery, Dr.'s James Andrews & Larry Lemak. 2 of the greats in orthopedic surgery.

lol

You live in the past. Andrew’s is in Florida now and his practice is there too.

Besides, that’s a minor medical impact to the overall field. It’s not critical care. It’s athletes….

Also, fyi, Andrew’s got his medical degree LSU.

Forgot Nashville… they too are better than birmingham for critical care medicine.

People who tout birmingham as the medical pinnacle of the south are living in the past. They made a push 25 years ago but have been eclipsed.

They aren’t even in the discussion anymore.

The political geography of Birmingham is so different than most of the rest of the South / America that it’s frankly kind of difficult to compare. How many other metro areas in America have less than 1/5th of their population in the city itself?

What is bham proper population and what is the metro area?

Nope. It's the banking center of the south and has the best hospitals in the southeast.

I’m guessing you haven’t been to Charlotte (banking leader) or Jacksonville (Mayo) or Houston (Anderson).

Isn't Birmingham suing a gas station because they are not preventing crime on their property?

The area they are talking about is on 3rd Ave just across i65 and that is considered downtown. The only damn reason there is no crime in the center of downtown is because everything is closed after dark except for where topgolf is and in Lakeview where cops continously circle the block when there's an event

3rd avenue west isn’t the same or near close to 3rd avenue North.

No. You’re the doofus and been fed a bill of goods. Look at your website again and try to find James Andrew’s anywhere listed as a physician.

James Andrew’s, the world renown orthopedic doctor moved to Florida years ago and opened a clinic in gulf breeze. He does not practice in birmingham. He left and practiced for a while in Florida before retiring.
The clinics in birmingham trade on the Andrew’s name with doctors who are unimpressive.
They are doctors who are no better than anywhere else. They use robots mostly. Actually many ortho surgeries are done with robots.

Andrew’s, when he was there was a trail blazer and made birmingham relevant in sports medicine but those days are long gone.

And again, orthopedic medicine is not considered critical medicine so it’s kind of a moot point.

Keep believing birmingham is the center of all critical medical greatness.
It’s not. Really never was

I live in Birmingham, but come to think of it the "Birmingham Shootings" would be a great football team name, and very accurate.

You’re slightly misinformed. The Andrew’s practice has multiple clinics and performs surgery at several locations in Alabama as well as the location in Florida. Professional, college and highschool, athlete's from all over the country travel to see Dr.’s Cain and Dugas now. Dr. Dugas pioneered the internal brace procedure that’s so commonly performed on UCL injuries now. To say it’s living in the past when the Andrews name is mentioned is just stupid.
