We had a very similar experience. Ours happened after the ACs were replaced. Company did a shite job sealing the wall penetration for the lines. It turned into a rat highway. I used baited snap traps in the attic, cage trap outside near the penetration, outdoor bait box with 2 different poisons, and (my favorite) a real-time wi-fi camera with a BB gun.

Once I was satisfied that we had killed all (or most) of the critters, I correctly (and tightly) sealed the penetration with metal flashing and new hardy plank.
