My wife (no pics today) is from Texas and when we go to visit her relatives I purposely stay off the interstates and go through all the small towns. Some of the diners out there are off the chart.
The best things are not on the interstate.

She probably lives in New Jersey where they still pump gas for you. A Buc-ees would blow her mind. Of course then write an article about how much gas was being pumped. Her head would explode
Read the article Baw, the photojournalist was born in Mississippi and lives in NC. She grew up eating from gas stations.

Did she go anywhere in Louisiana besides Metairie?

And usually it’s by a sweet old black lady and they’ll say “ have a good day baby” and It makes me smile every freaking time
Those black womenfolk see me come into the Chevron in Scooba,Ms say “ Hi Baby. Get your stuff. We are gonna drop you a fresh basket of livers “.
Without me asking. Fine people and fine food.

Serving food at gas stations isn't just a novelty to be found in the South.
My favorite bar-b-que place anywhere; in Kansas City:

Also the Hwy 6 exit on I-49 headed to Many has an Exxon I think right by the interstate that has the best meat pies and crawfish pies I’ve ever had.

NYTs discovers they serve food at gas stations in the south.
Some of you will do anything to be offended. I found the article complimentary. They serve food in gas stations in New York too, the article just seems to say, "wow, down South that is some REALLY good eating". I didn't sense condescention but admiration.

Then you wonder what’s behind that glass door when you hear that little bell ring. Is it the MAGA South? The welcoming South? Who’s at the cash register? Who’s at the grill?”
For shite's sake lady they are the same fricking place. These yankee stereotypes are just completely outdated
Absolutely this is the same thing. No doubt in my mind that MAGA folks are nicer and more welcoming than lefties.
And that's not a yankee thing, that is a coastal elite thing. Look at this map, you get rid of the blue circles and quite a lot of problems go with it.

Yeah, when I say yankee I really mean proggie. You know the type. Think they're Better than you, look down their nose at you, always so smug and right (when they are dead wrong).
I've known plenty of likeable Yankees that weren't like that. Hell my kids are half yankee. Its really about how you act and treat people and I think the south is MUCH more hospitable. May wear our emotions on our sleeves and be outspoken, but hell we'll still feed you and treat you like a guest should be until you start being disrespectful.

There are a ton of small rural towns where the local gas station is the only restaurant around. Usually because a gas station alone or restaurant alone wouldn’t survive but 2 in 1 does
I eat at one in Geiger AL all the time. M&M Market.

They do meat and 3, great burgers, and their breakfasts are to die for.
Geiger has a population of 155 (and I think that is a lie, its probably more like 40-50). But their will be a line of people to get a plate from there.
Their beef roast with onions and gravy, field peas, butter beans with cornbread will make you take a nap.

Deltaland,
You ever been to the Mennonite bakery in Brookville?
Ole Country Bakery?
It isnt a gas station but you seem to know most of the hole in the wall places in MS.

She deserves ridicule for the “MAGA south” reference.
Kate did not write the article, she wrote the book that inspired the article.
The MAGA South comment was unwarranted.

When I saw that she later went to college at Oberlin, I knew what to expect.

Just for clarity, it is not Kate who wrote the book the article is based on I assume that is author of the article. Kate went to The U of Montana and Old Miss.

Exactly. I get a $5 cup/bowl of gumbo from a gas station by me 1-2 times a week.
