"strategic wake-up call" to me sounds like he is trying to sneakily imply that the west needs to posture on direct involvement in order to get a better deal for Ukraine in peace talks.

Historically posturing sometimes leads to actual conflict, but I don't think its necessarily a bad strategy if that is his goal.

The quality of leaders in the West is really low. You're talking about people who aren't that smart, aren't that well educated, and on a fundamental level usually aren't serious people. On the other hand, they're almost always cowards though, and so they really avoid taking risks.

I do think we should be concerned about the possibility of a really dumb mistake. On the other hand, France did apparently invite Russia to the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landing, and they wouldn't have done that a year ago. Relations were too poor.
