Prior to Alabama taking on Ole Miss in Oxford on Saturday, the Daily Mississippian published and a column titled “Nick Saban overrated as a head coach” hours prior to kickoff. I'm guessing they think this would effect the Crimson Tide's play...?

Here's highlights...
quote:

Among the madness, there is but one sentence that few have been brave enough to say: Nick Saban is an overrated head coach. Stay with me. I am perfectly willing to admit that Alabama would not have gotten to where they are currently without Saban’s tremendous recruiting talents that resulted in him having a dominant football team early in his career. What I am not willing to say, however, is anything that would make it sound like Saban is even close to being the greatest college football coach to ever live.

Fast forward to today. The unprecedented success that Alabama saw almost immediately upon Saban’s arrival created a machine that the rest of the nation has yet to figure out how to stop. Saban had an incredible streak of recruiting that turned a mediocre team into a team that, for many years now, has required very minimal coaching.

Following the arrival of his first No. 1 overall recruiting class, Saban won his first of five national championships at Alabama. The machine was running. Now, he didn’t even need to recruit. Everybody wanted to play for the national champions. Saban’s early recruiting created a system in which the best players in the nation showed up on the Alabama campus, won games and titles, got drafted into the NFL and left a spot for the next round of the nation’s top recruits to take over.

With this in mind, five national titles really does not seem like enough in an 11-year period. Every season in recent memory, the Tide has had a national championship-or-bust mentality. If Saban were as good at being a head coach as he is at recruiting, Alabama would have won the national title on a yearly basis. But he isn’t.

I get what the guy is saying.....crazy but I get it. Personally I think he’s currently the best recruiter in the game and he’s always focused. He’s a machine. I remember his brief stint in the NFL and his attempt to match his coaching talent against guys on that level and it didn’t turn out so well.

OMG! How dare someone speak bad of Saban? LMAO! Why are so many fans so emotional? Saban is doing outstanding at Bama but can you really say he's the GOAT? Yes, it's a coaches job to recruit....it's the job of the entire staff. But we all have different opinions of what makes a coach great. For instance, I feel any good coach can win games with a more talented team than the opposition but an elite coach can win even without the best talent. Urban Meyer's has been successful and won at a high rate wherever he's coached, not just Florida and Ohio State. Go back and look at Saban's records at Michigan State. When he was in conference where his team did not land elite talent, he was about a .500 coach. He went to LSU with better talent and his career took off! The NFL was unkind to him....frankly because every team has talent. For all the great things we can say about him, we can't name one coaching gig he's had where he was ultra successful WITHOUT coaching a team immensely talented. Doesn't mean he's a bad coach, just not as elite as many claim. Before anyone has a fit, just go look at his Michigan State seasons. What's even funnier is the fact that nobody ever even refers to those years. However, we still hear about Meyer's seasons at Utah and Bowling Green.....because he was good EVERYWHERE he's been. And NO, I don't like Meyer's but because I dislike him doesn't mean I distort the facts. An elite coach wins whether his teams are the most talented or not. Hell, Saban was 7-6 his first ear at Bama....until he started getting elite talent. So the article isn't as off-basis as some think. Funny how a decade of #1 recruiting classes will lead to many championships. Hell, go look at most Nat'l Champs and then look where their classes were ranked in recruiting a few years prior. "In college, it's about Jimmy's and Joe's. NFL is more about X's and O's."

I do hope this is sarcasm, because the primary job of a college coach is talent evaluation and acquisition. You think those players just magically show up at Alabama because it has a pretty campus?
