What’s the must sees and do’s? Seems like it can be a neat lil place that gets overlooked on the map.

I’m no expert, but Santa Fe is inexpensive and cool.
I spent a night there last summer.
Tons of good hiking just 15 minutes from town.

I’m looking at possibly doing a ~30 miLe backpack this June in the southern part of the Sangre de Cristo Range, which is between Santa Fe and Taos.

If you concentrate on Santa Fe area, I can give some recs. Pretty sure I’ve made a few posts on it before, so I’ll dig those threads up.

We are heading there (again) for Spring Break. 3rd trip for my family in 2 years. Probably my 8th trip there. We love the area.

Antiquetiger had a report on a Route 66 trip he took last year. Several NM stops, leaning more towards eclectic spots. Awesome photos in the thread.

Potchafa had a great report on his trip to Red River/Taos. Lots of detail and photos.

There was a Sedona vs Santa Fe thread a few weeks back that had a few good posts about the Santa Fe area.

Anything in particular you are looking for?

Outdoors (skiing/snowboarding, hiking, backpacking, fishing, hunting, river rafting)

Culture (Mexican, Native, Dirty Meth Head/Antifa on Central Ave in ABQ)

Food (fine dining, mom and pop, local stuff like red/green chile or Native)

Art

Geology

Ranch life

Nerdy science stuff

TV and films

NM is an extremely diverse state.

Northern NM, ABQ, Southern NM, and Southeastern NM are all completely different.

Do you already have a route picked out?

The Brett Tucker Northern NM Loop looks pretty sweet (a lot longer than 30 miles but it passes right through the Sangre de Cristo; could maybe do a section):

Trail Journal of a bad arse hiker chick that completed it 2 years ago

I attempted to summit Wheeler Peak last June via Bull of the Woods trail but there was still snow pack about 2/3 way up and I was unprepared, had to bail. If you are going early June and plan on higher elevations pack appropriately.

pmags has some great trip reports about backpacking and hiking in the area.

I'd love to spend a week or two up in the Pecos Wilderness and Sangre de Cristos.

Please share stories and pictures if you make it up there.

Good friend of mine lived in NM for a couple of years. He always said NM is basically Santa Fe and Taos, then a bunch of wasteland. He even said Albuquerque sucks.

They're both kind of artsy towns, with Taos offering skiing and Santa Fe being a bit of a foodie town. Lots of good hiking around both.

Good breweries.

Most of the beers I tried tasted like pinesol. They use pinion nuts and I did not care for it. Can’t remember the two breweries we stoped at.

Chaco Canyon is amazing. A couple hours northwest of ABQ. Bring water and the hiking is not real tough.

The High Road between Santa Fe and Taos besides being very scenic, has several villages with art galleries and native american shops. Their are also several old colonoal structures along the way you can stop and gander. Ghost Ranch, Georgia O'Keefe's home for many years, is about 1 1/2 hours north of santa fe and has several small hikes to areas she painted as well as exhibits of her life and work. It's a really beautiful area and you can spend the night there in dorms, private rooms or camping.

New Mexico's "Mexican food" is so damned good. You can get a great meal at pretty much any hole in the wall joint in Albuquerque.

I would take a bath in New Mexico green chile sauce if it was socially acceptable, and if it didn't burn my sphincter off.

Yeah I believe it was in the Pecos Wilderness. Thanks for the links! I’m always looking for less popular stuff.

Any updates on your hiking plan?

I've been looking into some different 3-5 day routes around the Pecos Wilderness and there are a lot of options.

Just wondering if you have narrowed anything down.

It was a low snow year for pretty much the entire southern Rockies so there should not be any snow concerns in June.

Like someone said already, I did a NM road trip last year. It is a beautiful state and the food is amazing.

In the northern part of the state, you have the Route 66 corridor. Santa Fe is one of the most beautiful cities Ive ever visited in the US. Madrid (between SF and Albuquerque) is a fun town, check out the movie "Wild Hogs".

Tucumcari and Santa Rosa are great towns on Route 66.

I'd avoid Roswell. Not much to do there. The alien crap is damn near gone. There is a winery there.

White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns are great.

There is a place between White Sands and Carlsbad called Cloudcroft. It's up in the mountains. We drove through it and it looked like a great place. It is a ski resort during the winter, so the resort maybe inexpensive during the summer.

I didn't make it to Albuquerque, Taos, 4 Corners, etc, but I do know it's beautiful country up there.
