I love Gila. Both times I've been were in April as well.

Weather was always perfect, but it can and will get cold at night.

Big Bend National Park. Weather should be nice then. Or Cloudcroft, but might be kind of cold.

Nice! Did you backpack the rivers where you have to cross 150+ times?

Might do Big Bend and Guadaloupe.

Would love to backpack Gila, but it's over 18 hours and we don't have that much time off.
Also, not sure about walking in water all day followed by 20s at night

Be aware that Guadalupe is dry with no water up on the mountain, which can present difficulty for multiple day backpacking trips. It’s really awesome though.

Gila would be cool. Don’t do White Sands for backpacking. Definitely worth a day and possibly a single overnight, but it would get old IMO.

Cloudcroft is high elevation abs might be cold/snowy that time of year. Big Bend is a good choice, obviously.

I read this today. Apparently you're packing all the water you need in your pack?? The loops we were looking at are 13-15 miles so only two days.

How so?

Really gorgeous rock formations riding strikingly out of flat desert. And the high altitude forests up top are very cool. It’s a dramatic place with incredible views that look out over flat earth.

Can easily be mid 90s by then. Guadalupe is much cooler in early April.

on a two day 13 mile hike we took in big bend in October the two of us each packed three 2L bladders of water and it was just enough. We used one whole bladder cooking dinner and making coffee which I did not calculate properly

the hike in was pretty rough carrying all that weight

We always backpacked Iron Creek/Middle Fork areas. We went for turkey hunting (backpack in 6-7 miles and set up camp and hunt for a week), so I've never hiked the entire length of the trails.

But most of the rivers are pretty easy to cross. You just hop on the rocks.

Have you ever done this? You have all the gear?

Reason I'd ask is there's a big difference between 18 miles in the mountains and in areas with questionable water as opposed to most flat with plentiful creeks.

Packing water is not fun IMO. Much more enjoyable to go to areas that have regular water, that time of year the melt will potentially be very low.

My wife and I (pre-marriage) hiked Guadalupe Peak and camped in a backcountry site, carrying our own water. We were going to do a multi-day through hike but she came down with the flu on the way up. Rationing water and having the flu don't work very well together. We hiked out after 1 night, and we still had gone through most of our water. Drove to Carlsbad, did that and Roswell (never again on Roswell... what a waste).

last i checked, state parks in NM were still closed to non-residents and there is a 14 day quarantine for anyone entering NM from out of state.

that shouldn't be a problem if you stay on federal land, and as far as i know the quarantine is not enforced. but just throwing information your way.

We’ve only done two backpacks, but want to start doing more.

We did 35 miles in Grand Teton and about 12 in Flat Tops Wilderness.

Never carried much water but we have overpacked on food big time with a bear canister each.

Big Bend. The blue bonnets might still be out there. Really awesome because they are huge compared to regular ones.
