When is renting a car for a road trip worth it?

Financially I mean? So assuming you can get a free mileage rental car, if you were to take a road trip when does it make sense to rent it? Has anyone done the math? The other topic got me thinking, if you do 6,500 miles in 2 weeks. You could get a rental car for what $600? That's under 10 cents a mile, worth it probably right?

Walk from LA to Vegas and let me know if you ever wished you had rented a car instead

This is easy if MB > MC then get the rental if MB < MC then don’t get the car.

Back when gas was more expensive than it is now, I routinely rented a car for trips. I drive a truck that gets 14mpg and would have rentals that got 35+mpg. I would always run the math to see if it were worth it though.

I guess it all depends on what kind of car you have

If you have Costco, they have the best deals around.

Forget the math I rent a car Everytime. The convenience of not having to worry about a break down, or anything else is worth it imo

I do this all of the time.
MY RULE OF THUMB:
Lots of miles - Short # of days = I rent
300+ miles per day

100-200 miles per day only -Long # of days
Drive my own.

Also weekend rates are low, so more justifiable in the weekends.

Do you get the insurance from the rental place?

My dad always did this when we took road trips as a kid.

He was the type to keep his vehicles until the wheels fall off so he didn't want to put all the mileage of a road trip on his car.

I would like to know where you’re renting a car with unlimited mileage for two full weeks for just $600. In my experience, that’s very cheap.

I rented a car to drive to Tennessee for the LSU-Vandy game. The reason I did is because I recently bought a car that gets 18-20 mpg the highway and I didn’t want to put all those miles on it. From Thursday to Monday, I paid 136 plus gas which was worth it to me.

I usually do not, but check w your own insurance company as to coverage.
...you will have a decision to make.

TX does not allow for partial ins purchase.. all / none.
Do not know in LA

$600 may be overly cheap but I’ve rented cars for $280-$300/ week plus taxes before. I’ve never done over a 8 night rental but I assumed it wasn’t more then twice what a 1 week rental cost.

Eta: just looked and for 2 weeks from my local hertz off airport location (without even trying to look for a deal) it was anywhere from $229 to $313 for a mini van per week. A minivan was $735 and there was a standard SUV and multiple cars for $635 or less for 2 weeks after taxes all said and done.

But where? I rent almost exclusively at airports, which is probably more expensive. I think the only non-airport rental car I had was in Anchorage, Alaska, in peak summer.

When I rent it’s usually a week at a time, and from airports. Within the past two years I’ve rented from Sacramento, Bozeman, Sioux Falls, and Sioux City for $250-$300/week. Usually compact cars, once an SUV. I’d think $600/ 2 weeks is reasonable.

Non airport, but I was talking about renting a car for a road trip which would be more likely to be a local non-airport rental. Yes airport rentals are usually more expensive.

Lots of places.

Carrentals.com shows renting a car with unlimited miles in Orlando for 10/16-10/30 at $283 with all taxes and fees.

This is similar to the price I got recently for a 2 week rental. (I went with an SUV for $313 not in Orlando)
