Rome, Florence, & Venice.

rome:
get an airbrb in Trastevere...
great mix of conveniences(for tourists) with local nightlife/culture(eating)
since this is also where all the foreign students stay in rome...really easy to bang the american exchange students away from home the 1st time.

florence:
do a tuscan tours that at least takes you to the working vineyards, sienna and a walled old town like san gimignano.
...also drink the house wine...every. single. meal.

venice:
just visit as a day trip.. take your photos with the other hordes of tourists...then leave.
don't stay the night.
..also dont buy any junk here.

One of the best afternoons we had was sitting on Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio in Venice and people watching while eating cheese and drinking wine. That’s what the locals do. And so should you.

In Rome I would recommend getting the Coliseum tour that includes the underground and third level. You can't get to those levels without a special pass. The top level has great views of the whole area. The Scavi tour at the Vatican is also incredible but not easy to get.

In Florence make sure you go to the Accademia and see the statue of David. Fairly quick tour and the most impressive thing I saw on my trip. Can't explain why but it simply blew me away. Another good thing is to get a wine tour in Tuscany. Find someone on Tripadvisor and they'll pick you up in Florence. Our guide took us to Michaelangelo's Plaza, a couple wineries, a lunch in a village and a stop in another small town. Fun day.

In Venice I did a walking tour followed by a pub tour with the same guy. Each were about 2 hours and an awesome experience. Got a nice guided tour of just walking around, then got to drink and eat in some local places and chat with local people. I don't remember his name, but he was out of the Rick Steeves book and has been on his show. Any small operation would be similar.

I would also highly recommend going to St. Mark's square at night and getting a drink while listening to an orchestra. Nice way to end a night.

I agree the at Venice can be experienced in two days. Also, watch for pick-pockets in St Marks square in Venice. We watched a duo work where one guy would abruptly walk in front of a tourist and his partner would go for the tourist's wallet. We alerted a policeman and hauled them off. The country isn't dangerous, just guard your handbags.

The more time in Florence, the better. We loved that place.
