re: What was the best out of the country vacation that you enoyed
The wife and I did a twelve day cruise out of Rome that hit Venice, Sicily, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Kotor, Montenegro and Slovenia. Spent four days in Rome beforehand and took the train to Florence. A couple of years ago we spent four or five days in London and then the same amount of time in Wales. Spent one day in Chichester at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. When in Wales, we attended a private garden party at Bodorgan Hall in Anglesey, hosted by Sir George Meyrick and his wife, Lady Jean.

2 weeks on the south island of New Zealand with the wife and a rental car. Beautiful and the Kiwis are great people.

Close second was 4 weeks of Eurail. More or less - Paris, Nice, Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome, Corfu, Venice, Innsbruck, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam.

Berchtesgaden and Salsburg. The alps are beautiful, loved the WWII history ie Hitler's Eagles Nest, etc. Second best would be the south of France.

London and Paris from 2017 was a great solo trip.

Japan is always a blast for me too (went in 2011, 16, 18, and will stop again for a few days next year)

Interlockn, Grindewald, and Kandersteg in Switzerland were absolutely mind blowing. We hiked up to Oeschinen Lake outside of Kandersteg one day and I've never seen anything like it.

Fly in to Florence, stay in Tuscany for as long as you can, take the train from Florence to Venice, fly home from Venice.

re: What was the best out of the country vacation that you enoyed
Isla Holbox

To get here, we flew into the Cancun airport and had a private car (van) drive us to the town of Chiquila, where the ferry took us over to Isla Holbox. The total cost was $250 USD round-trip and worth every cent.

CASH IS KING ...and I mean it. This place is a time warp back to a small fishing town with no paved roads, no cars, and cell/wifi service that will remind you of AOL's dial-up days. All of these things were the perfect recipe for us to get away. Most places only take cash. The USD-to-Pesos exchange rate (market) is 19-to-1, but on the island you should expect a 17:1 in restaurants and 15:1 at some of the smaller beach bars.

The island has bikes and golf carts aplenty. Nearly everything is negotiable, but the prices were so cheap it wasn't worth my time to save $3 a day on a bike. Just like anywhere else we've been in Mexico (island wise), time is of little importance. Although signs may say "open from 9-6", that is simply a guideline. There are dogs ALL OVER the island. They are protected in the same manner as the flamingos and dolphins. The folks that live there are very much into their Mayan heritage and you'll see it (and taste) everywhere you go. No restaurants were haggling people to come eat, no beach vendors walking around trying to sell you hats and party favors. Just a quiet town with super nice people, zero crime, and handfuls of European backpackers just passing through.

Kite Surfing was crazy popular here, as there were well over 20 of them in the water every day (on the northern point). Artwork covered the town...airbrush, paintings, murals, mosaics, it was all beautiful. Not an ounce of graffiti.

This beautiful little gem of an island was an amazing getaway for a week. Could have stayed another week if I had the time....and more perfect weather. We had a nasty storm blow in our last night....you'll see in some pics below. We learned on the second day that the island is pronounced "hole bosh" ...not Holbox as it appears phonetically. Any questions about the pics or the trip, fire away.

@VABuckeye - lots of high rez pics so scroll at your own risk. Didn't feel like writing too much because they island isn't much, but in the same breath, is SO MUCH.

::::: THE HOTEL :::::

Our Hotel was Para Ti, super affordable and a 2 minute walk to the beach and also into town. Quiet enough to be away from the live music at nights (which lasted until midnight or so). It's owned by a nice Cuban lady in her 50's, sorry no pics.

This place was creative with their bathroom doors....

Nice long pic filled post, but I’d be bored as heck after a few days of relaxation. I live in a rural area, I don’t want to spend my vacation in one.

Very hard to narrow it down to a single best trip abroad, but two stand out: a long wandering driving tour from Rome to Palermo and back, and a similar jaunt through the southern Scottish highlands (Trossachs) that began and ended in Edinburgh.

To each his own!

Between work and fatherhood, my life is quite hectic. We favor destinations where there are remote beaches and delicious fresh seafood.

That scream time warp back to a fishing town. Lmao

I really enjoyed turkey. So much history and culture.

Also really enjoyed curacao. Island had a great vibe.

Don’t be a dick. HGG wanted to share photos of his travels on the Travel Board. He wasn’t trying to brag or throw it in people’s face.

Not sure if serious. There was no need for all of those photos. I think he’s a good guy but he does it every freaking time.
