What to do in Kona Hawaii?
Posted by WM_Tiger on 4/1/18 at 6:44 pm21
Wife and I are staying in Kona for a week. This will be our first trip to Hawaii. Besides taking the tour up Mauna Kea and laying on the beach, what else is their to do on the big Island??

How much research did you do before spending all that money? Certainly there were things about Kona that influenced you choose it.

I really didn’t pay anything. Resort is free and plane tickets are paid with points I never use. So I am not out any money. I’ve done research, just curious about what suggestions the travel board can offer.

We’ll have to try the coffee tours. Thanks!

Do a night manta ray tour. The beaches on the kohala coast are legit. The black sand beach at the top of the island where you ha e to hike down to is pretty interesting. I spent most days snorkeling and hanging out at the beach. Don’t forget volcanoes np obviously, and head to Hilo for the tropical side of the island and waterfalls. You obviously are renting a car, right?

My favorite places on the big island:
-Hapuna beach
-Green Sands beach
-Mauna Kea peak
-Waipio Valley
-Coffee tours
-golf
-Volcano is cool on the Hilo side
I went to UH Hilo for two years and loved the island. There is something for everyone. Life will move at a snail’s pace- enjoy it.

Ali'i Drive has a lot of cool buildings of significance to the Hawaiian Royal family.
The Painted Church (St Benedict's Catholic Church) in Honaunau.
Also near the Painted Church is one of if not the best snorkel/scuba spots I've ever been to, Two Step at Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Park.
As previously mentioned Waipio Valley is incredible. I will warn you ahead of time though, if you aren't used to hiking it's gonna be rough. The road that you follow is one of the steepest in the world. However, the twin waterfalls at the end make it worthwhile.
I suggest starting early in the day when you go see Kilauea. Drive down Hwy 11 South out of Kona. It takes you through a lot of cool scenery and you can also hit the southern most point of the United States on the way. Hit Hilo and then take Hwy 200 for the drive back for some of the most alien landscape you've ever seen. Once you get between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa the rainforest environment stops abruptly and suddenly you are in an arid desert/surrounded by old lava fields.

If you like nice resorts and the beach its great. Otherwise, there isn't much else there.
Go to Lava Lava Beach club for sunset dinner on the beach in Waikaloa.
Go the Hawi on the North Shore. Cool little town for some eats and shops. Sign up for Flumin da ditch. Kayak rides down the old sugar cane ditches and tunnels. REally fun.
