Over the past few years, wife and I have done: Spain (Barcelona, Sevilla, Madrid), Italy (Rome, Florence, CT, Venice), Paris, NYC, London, Dublin (and West Ireland), Dominican Republic, Mexico a few times, Key West, etc etc.

We do want to explore Asia, but are waiting probably another year to use our miles for such a long flight. My wife has interest in Colombia but I have none.

Will probably be back to Europe again. I have a friend getting stationed outside of Frankfurt in the Summer for at least 3 years. So Germany is a distinct possiblity.

I'm really interested in Greece, Prague/Vienna/Budapest, etc.

Any thoughts on where I should go given where I have been so far? Non sarcastic replies would be appreciated.

Based on your list, Asia would be high on my list too.

would probably be #2 on my list as well. Throw in there some of the Mediterranean isles.

Israel would be high on my list as well.

I loved Prague, my wife a little less so. What are you guys "into" if that makes sense... My wife specifically didn't like the more rustic food in Prague it seemed... I on the other hand loved the ability to get venison stews and wild boar sausage on restaurant menus among other unique offerings.

My wife *loved* Innsbruck, Austria. We did that one as a combo trip with Munich and took the train between which was lovely.

Can't speak to Vienna/Greece/Budapest at all...

Other places we've enjoyed that I don't see on your list but aren't insane flights:
Costa Rica
Bahamas
Victoria, BC (Canada)
Puerto Rico (El Convento hotel always gets high marks from me)

Long flights:

We did Bora Bora on a sales trip that she won and had a lovely time, but probably wouldn't spend my own money to go that far and get what amounts to a pretty similar experience to some of the Carribean islands. It's different, but not enough different IMO. Go to Bahamas, catch some fish and make some Tahitian raw fish salad on your own with coconut milk instead and save some miles/cash.

We decided to extend to NZ and Australia from there though, and had a wonderful time. Even as touristy as it was, the Waitomo Glow Worm caves in NZ were really neat. Ferndale (I think was the name) Animal Preserve/Zoo outside of Sydney, AUS was a really cool experience as well. Feeding Wallabys and Kangaroos, got to hold a Wombat (along with Sugar Gliders, Possums, and a few other things), and help feed an Echidna.

Argentina. Cheap. Great beef i you're a beef eater. A great wine region with one of the best back drops in the world.

Corsica. The perfect blend of French and Italian. Technically it's French but there is an Italian side and strong Italian influence. It's home to the most rigorous trek in Europe, the GR20. Corsica is near the top of my list of next places to go.

GR20

St. Vincent & the Grenadines. Top of our list for places we haven't visited in the Caribbean. It looks a lot like St. John & the BVI to me which certainly isn't a bad thing.

Bratislava is in Slovakia, not Slovenia.

Yep. Great choice. There's been a few good reviews from these on this board. Cheap, good food & beer (maybe not for everyone) and lots to see and do. The train ride between the two is also very cheap and quite enjoyable.

Slovenia

Planning this for next spring and can't wait. Shooting for Ljubljana, Bled (and nearby outdoor day trips from here) & Piran.

I'm downvoting this post just to screw with you.

Quick hijack because I have a question for you VABuckeye. As you know I'll be going to VA and The Inn at Little Washington in a month or so. Do you have a rec for a (public/not absurdly expensive) golf course in the area that I can sneak in a quick 18 one morning?

Slovakia, but you could easily add that between Prague & Budapest. The train between the two, stops there.

That area for the golf course or are you staying elsewhere?

From there it's going to be a hike. You either have to go over Thornton Gap to Luray, south towards Charlottesville or north to Front Royal. Washington, VA isn't in golf course land. The Luray and Front Royal golf courses definitely aren't expensive ones but I don't know what kind of shape they'll be in in April depending on the weather here.

Staying about 5 miles from whatever town the restaurant is. I think the town is Sperryville or something close to that?

That's a shame there's nothing nearby - I was hoping there'd be a place that i could wake up early and quickly play a round. Don't think i'll be able to drive a decent ways to play.

Oh well, more time to spend at vineyards and breweries.

/hijack. Sorry OP.

Some non-European suggestions: Vancouver Island is amazing. Olympic National Park in Washington. Grenada is my favorite island in the Caribbean.

Other European suggestions from where I have been: Asturias Spain. The Picos are amazing! I would echo Prague and Budapest. My favorite capital cities in Europe.

Places I'm about to go: We are going to Romania next month and can't wait. It looks amazing. Taking a Viking river cruise. With stops in Bulgaria and Serbia.

Places I really want to go: Poland. Including Krakow and the Tatra mountain region. Latvia and Estonia.

You will get a lot of good suggestions on this forum. Have fun!

It's a shame you aren't staying at The Homestead for a night or two. Then you could play the Old Course. It's on Sam Snead Highway. I can't guarantee that it isn't expensive though. The Homestead was a five star resort. It's an Omni property now.

quote:

The Omni Homestead Resort's Old Course was completed in 1892 and is distinguished as home of the nation's oldest first tee in continuous use. As the game has evolved over time, so too has the Old Course – updates by William S. Flynn and Rees Jones have kept pace with the times. Abundant fairway contouring gives most shots a side hill, uphill, or downhill lie to smallish greens, making approach shots interesting.

We’ve been to PR a few times and have stayed at El Convento.

Definitely interested in Croatia. Vienna has really popped up on my wife’s radar.

Argentina is interesting.
