Hope that everyone had a nice thanksgiving with friends and family. This thread is to see if you learned any new travel tips/features over the past holiday. In my case, I learned a few things on my way traveling from Lafayette through Houston to Dallas.

1. It is possible to drive from BR to the lafayette airport in an hour both ways as there was no traffic on Tuesday 2pm or Saturday 6pm. I guess I used up my miracles for the year

2. I had no idea there was so much construction from Breaux Bridge to Lafayette. Does someone know when this started or when it will finish? The narrow lanes really make it a pain in the arse to pass 18 wheelers.

3. I flew from LFT- Houston - DFW and did not know terminal C in IAH was updated. It was very open and plenty of restaurants/shopping/seating, would highly recommend connecting in IAH from now on. As a side note, the united agents could not have been nicer at LFT and IAH (shocking I know). Since I hit no traffic on 10W, the agents were able to get me on earlier flights in both airports with exit row/ economy + seats. The key here was that I did not have a checked bag, only a carryon. If you do not pick a seat assignment, more than likely the gate agents will give you a better seat than the crappy economy seats with 30" legroom. If you get to the airport for an earlier flight, be nice with the agents, tell them you do not have a checked bag, and to see if they can get you home earlier. Note: I do not have status with United, the agents did all this for free while changing online would have been $75.

4. The LFT airport only has 3 gates and long-term parking is only $6/day. For Tuesday through Saturday I only spent $30 on parking, much cheaper than any options at MSY and even BTR. The next time you are looking at flights out of MSY take a browse at LFT to see if there is anything in the same price range, it might be worth it to spend $30 more on flights if you'll save the money and time on close parking and easy in/out access to the airport.

5. Construction on 35E in Dallas appears to finally be near completion. From Lewisville to Denton is 4 lanes the whole way and the nightmare of 2 lanes appears to be over. Does anyone know if they are done with the construction towards downtown Dallas from Lewisville?

Although this is more of a trip report, I'm curious if anyone else learned anything while traveling over the holiday. If you did, please share with the class

As a side note, I'm pretty sure I saw 777tiger on his way to miami saturday evening, was a beautiful afternoon to fly

It started a few months ago and will be finished: never.

I am testing this theory in 2 weeks. I flew to ATL from MSY but got killed on the parking and gas from LFT to MSY and back. The price difference on the flight is only $150 per ticket.

I learned to stay off I-10 in Louisiana at all costs.

$100 and above is about my price point for driving down to LFT/MSY from BR. Now if you're driving 2 hrs each way from Laffy to MSY, that's a full tank of gas (say $50) plus an extra $30 in parking over 5 days. You're already at $80 over the ticket cost and now once you get back to LA, you still have an extra 2 hours to go...

Not to mention all the money I spent partying with my friends in NOLA

I learned (again) that flying private is so much better than commercial.

I learned to be thankful for Walmart Auto Center being open on Sunday mornings when nothing else was.

Drove over some kind of blade that gashed the back left tire and got lodged in there as well. It started losing pressure pretty quickly.

Fortunately, the detour to Walmart only delayed us about an hour during our 700 mile drive home yesterday.

Had no idea walmart auto was open sunday mornings, good to know for future road trips when mechanics aren't open on sundays.

Ugh that's a long drive, why not fly for this trip? It's basically houston to el paso 10 hours each way or a 1 1/2 hr flight.

We made stops in 3 different cities throughout the week visiting family & friends. My in-laws house just happened to be the final stop almost 700 miles away.

Also, flights for 4 of us Thanksgiving week weren't cheap even if we were just going to one place.

They are done with that.... And with the Horseshoe Interchange in Downtown Dallas.... But it's just as big a cluster frick as it was before they redesigned it. The big project now is 183 from 35e in Dallas to dfw airport.

You have family in Denton? My parents live up there. .

Yup, got family in pilot point, sanger and a few friends by UNT. Had no idea denton was turning into a hipster town. We went to an arcade bar near the square for games/darts and they had an open mic night. It was the cringiest event I have ever witnessed, god help denton get back on the right track...

Denton has been the hipster capital of DFW for 10 years or so.....maybe longer. When we go to see live music in Dallas we sometimes play "spot the Dentonite". But there are still a lot of rednecks in Denton. They must have stayed home for the holidays.

1. Colombia has some incredibly gorgeous women. Great food too.

2. Apparently when flying from Latin America to the U.S. an extra security station is required at the departure gate.

3. Global entry was worth it.

I learned that the people of east tennessee are very friendly, and i enjoyed my stay up there.

I also learnt that the people of east tennessee think the left lane is for cruising, and the right lane only exists to get on and off the interstate.
My drive from Gatlinburg to Nashville had me encounter the worst group of drivers i've ever been around. I'd come over a hill and there would be 100 cars in the left lane, and 3 in the right. I bet i passed up a couple hundred cars that were in the left lane, most of which weren't going over 70mph.

I also learned that the vast majority of hot women i saw in Gatlinburg were LSU fans.

Colombia is big into Black Friday and Christmas decorations even if Thanksgiving isn't a thing there. And it's an absolutely beautiful country, at least the Cauca valley and foothills (Manizales especially).

Orlando airport has an insanely stupid system where you get your luggage in 15 minutes, but just to take through customs. Then you are required to put it on a different belt and go wait for an hour at a different luggage claim.

Did not realize you started this thread

Honestly, it just seems like a town that was once pretty awesome but is now quite rundown. Not sure if that's a fair assumption or not.

To be honest, I only spent a day there. Was visiting family in Auburn, NY and flew/slept in Syracuse.
