Thinking about taking a trip to the mountains next December and we are looking at staying around Bethel. Besides the obvious things to do in winter (skiing), is there anything else to do in that part of the state? Placing to visit? Restaurants? We will be traveling with kids so looking for things they might like to do as well. TIA

If rural Quebec and West Virginia had a baby, it’d be Western Maine.

Don’t make eye contact with the locals.

Can confirm. Mom's side of the family have been there since it was Massachusetts.

Snowmobiling is very popular in those parts, as long as there is snow on the ground. Hunting and fishing are popular activities as well buy probably not in December. Can't say there are any popular food establishments, but maybe you could come across a farm-to-table type establishment.

I wish you the best of luck with your search.

You could go snowmobiling if the snow is good for the season. I remember going paintballing up in northern maine (moosehead lake region) and showing up at a chicken farm . Go on a moose safari (aka drive around for hours making moose calls at dusk)

Drive over to Mount Washington in New Hampshire, but it may be closed in December. It is about an hour from Bethel.

Google it if you are not familiar with it. I believe the summit has the most severe weather in the lower 48, or something like that.

I think they have goods days but maybe not in December.

I know in the summer you can drive to the top or take a cog train. I think the cog is a big gear that pulls the train; the wheels such as on a regular train would just slip on the snow/ice I guess; and I think it is steep.

We were in Maine & NH last summer but did not have time to go to Mount W, but I read about it.

Bethel is pretty limited. Sunday River is a great ski mountain for the east but its not a great ski village atmosphere. Matterhorn is a cool bar and Sunday River brewing is good but just not a ton of options in Bethel.
I would advise going another hour north to Sugarloaf or going to Vermont to Stowe or Killington.

We paid a few bucks to ride up in a van. So glad I did not drive our car up. That road is narrow and scary as hell when you meet another vehicle.

But the visit was very nice. It was in June, and we wore coats at the top.

Travis Pastrana Mt Washington

Set the record in 2017 with a time of 5:44 without a co-driver.
