Ancient Tumi backpack that's still going strong, Travelpro Maxlite 4 international sized carry on spinner, same kind of small carry on tote that fits atop the spinner. Just bought a Fjallraven Totepack that rolls up pretty compactly to use as a daybag & as a carry on for the plane ride home...so I can put purchased liquids in my checked bag for ride home & still have a second bag for the plane.

Osprey Mutant 38 backpack. I've only been questioned about the size once. Coming back from Europe through Amsterdam, the gate person tried to have me check the bag. After telling her I've flown numerous times with no problems, she pulled out one of the metal overhead bag sizers and made me put my bag in it to show that it conforms. It is as big as I would go as it gets tight on smaller planes.

If you are travelling with a laptop and/or big tablet, check out the Timbuk2 Command. I bought one after it was posted here a while back and it's been great. Lots of internal compartments and pockets, plus good padding for electronics.

I have a large Samsonite and a medium Hartmann Rolling Hardshell checked bags and a small Briggs & Riley carry on duffel that I love. I like to check my non-essential stuff and keep everything I absolutely need (meds, etc) with me so I'm not lugging everything around the airport.

A tan top load canvas duffle. Looks like it's straight out of the Vietnam era. But it was cheap ($15 on Amazon), durable (it has been to 9 countries over the last 4 years or so), has decent shoulder straps for heavier/checked bag loads, and can be folded so that it is small enough to pass for a carry-on.

Tumi Alpha II 4 wheeled spinner and a Tumi Alpha II expandable brief. Expensive, but worth it to me.

I was a Tumi diehard for years....until I broke a trolley handle & Tumi would no longer fix it. So I bought an ultralight Travelpro piece & discovered that Tumi weighs too damn much....out went the Tumi. FWIW, I try not to check, so I'm not overly concerned about baggage-hold durability.

I have an Osprey farpoint 46 backpack I take to europe for 3 week trips.....although I check it I could get away with using it as a carry on. I carry on a Swissgear Scan smart 17" backpack that has a laptop compartment.

Got tired of lugging around a suitcase and checking it in lockers and at hotels, so I got a backpack and day pack and will go light and mobile on my next trip.

Pack: 36L Deuter Futura Pro

Day Pack: 15L Deuter Speed Lite

Toiletry Bag: Sea to Summit

Stuff Sack: Sea to Summit ultra-sil (for dirties)

Probably. Been using the Farpoint 55 for about 5 years now.

I've never had to check the 40L big part except for the small CRJs.

No foreign carrier has stopped me either when I've flown economy including KLM, Lufthansa, Vueling, Bangkok Airways, and LATAM.
