Looking to take a short (4-5 day) family vacation over Mardi Gras. We were thinking a relaxing mountain (but not necessarily skiing) vacation, but we're open to anything. What are some maybe overlooked destinations that might be good that time of year?

The past few years for Mardi Gras we have done San Antonio, Chicago, and San Francisco. SF/Bay Area was by far our favorite but had a great time at all 3.

Not saying it's "overlooked" but Asheville sounds like it would fit what you're looking for.

Mountains but not skiing? Maybe Big Ben National Park would be a good choice, if your family likes hiking.

My wife is a teacher, so Mardi Gras week is usually our travel. We always leave the US though so I do not think I have great recs for you.

Have friend LSU) who loves Pagosa Springs.
He bought a place up there
He rents it, but I do not want to sound like an ad so I will not put the info here. You can always ask.

If you have kids, it's the best week to travel. Two years ago to Chile, last year to New Zealand, and next year to Argentina (it's late summer in the Southern Hemisphere).

We leave town at MG as well: last year, to London, year before to Sicily/southern Italy, also to Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Monterrey, CA, DC, and NYC.
