Looking to take the kids to D.C. in April. I know there is lots to see. What is some must sees? Arlington Cemetery is on my list, but what else? And what airport to fly in?

Arlington Cemetery is a must...make sure to see the changing of the guard.

The spy museum is pretty neat for kids. Do the white house tour, you have to submit request to do it in advance.

Fly into wherever is cheaper. Dulles typically is for me.

Do:
Arlington Cemetery
Spy museum (awesome for kids)
Newseum (really interesting as well)
Holocaust Museum (sad, but in my opinion the best museum in DC)
Capital / White House / Supreme Court tours.
The Smithsonian has a ton of good stuff, including a lot of art

How old are the kids? How long are you staying?
Are you going for the Cherry Blossom Festival? It is usually in April.

If you search this board there are several post about DC with good ideas about transportation, places to stay and eat, etc.

In addition to sites already mentioned above; the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. If the kids like air planes the Air & Space Museum on the Mall is good and there is one at Dulles airport (have not been there but hear it is very good). If they like animals there is Natural History Museum on the Mall and I think the dinosaur exhibit just reopened after being closed for 5 years for renovation.

We went to DC for the Cherry Blossom Festival this year. It is very crowded then.

You can rent a boat and paddle around the tidal basin.

Reagan is really close and convenient.
Tons of museums and most are free. The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and American History are next door to each other and great for kids. Walk the National Mall and see the Washington Monument, WWII Memorial and Lincoln Memorial. The Capital and White House are close so you can see those as well.
Other options could include a visit to Georgetown and the Wharf.
Great food town as well.

You should post the age of your kids.

If they are old enough, I highly recommend renting bikes and touring all the monuments and areas of the city that way. There are plenty of docking stations - if you're a fit family you could even bike out to Arlington and back. Great way to spend a whole afternoon, biking all around.

Went last May with my kids (18, 10 & 8 at the time of the trip) and the best thing we did was a bike tour of all the monuments!

They loved the metro too

We took a tour of the monuments at night. It was spectacular and we had a full moon that night as well. Those were some fantastic photos. The Korean War memorial was especially haunting at night.

If you want to do White House and/or Capitol tours sign up well in advance. Also, avoid Easter weekend (unless you want to do the Lincoln Memorial sunrise service) as some things (like White House and Capitol tours) are shut down on some of those days. We've been to D.C. Easter weekends (Friday through Monday) the last two years; the museums, etc. are still open but definitely those two tours weren't happening. Easter in 2020 is April 12th.

We visited the Senate. You will need to ask your state representative or senator’s office for the “invitation”. Got to meet our tour guide in the representative’s office (guide being an intern) and got a tour with less then 10 people. Not sure if you need to do this for the White House also (I didn’t make the arrangements).

Don’t skip the holocaust museum.

Know that the Smithsonium is actually about 10 different museums, including the holocuast, and they’re FREE. The DC zoo is also free, but its a but out (part of the Hop On/Hop Off system though...a good way to get around).

Ford’s Theatre to learn about Lincoln’s assasination.

We also rented a car for our last day and drove down to Mt.Vernon. Worth the drive! Someone famous lived there but they didn’t put their name on it so...

Just went in October with a 12, 9, and 3 year old. Did most of the items listed above and they had a great time. The best stop for us though was the spy museum.
Can’t recommend Founding Farmers enough for dinner. It was great and they had good kid dinner and specialty drink options.
Old Ebbits Grill was also great for lunch.

My wife and I are going in a couple weeks. It was my christmas present. This is a bucket list trip for me. I assume we should expect very cold/snowy weather am I correct?

We are only going to be there for 3 days on the ground. 2 in the air. So 5 days for the trip, but just 3 actually sight seeing in DC.

What are some restaurant recommendations?

The Bureau of Engraving & Printing is a good tour too. You'll see literal pallets of money in various stages of production. Even if it is a pallet of $1's, thinking of the amount of cash sitting on a pallet is mind boggling.

As someone already suggested, do a night tour of the monuments, but do it with the Trolley tour company. I've done several, and the trolley tour company is far and away the best overall experience with the most knowledgeable drivers/tour guides.

If you have access to a car, you might consider a trip to Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson. It is an impressive house, and the grounds are kept largely as Jefferson did. Colonial Williamsburg is also another good trip if you have a car.

Finally, to add to another suggestion, stay near a Metro stop, and learn how to use it on your first day. Trains cycle through stations every 5 - 10 minutes, and it is THE way to travel inside the city, as well as some outlying areas/communities.

Fly into DCA if you can.

Hillwood House up in Rock Creek park is amazing. Marjorie Merriweather Post's house. Gardens and House tour.

Old Ebbitt Grill is touristy but worth it for the oysters. Check out the fish market near the wharf.

DC is now a certified eaters now, so pick some spots that appeal to you. 38 Essential Restaurants

Do a Capitol tour through your Congressman. Tour Mount Vernon. African American museum is amazing.
