The wife and I are headed there first week of July and need to find the must see attractions. It will be our first time there. Recommendations on where to stay that's pretty central to the attractions.
TIA

My favorite attraction was Mt Vernon
There's so much to do and see, it really depends on your taste.

There are alot of things to see but I would highly recommend the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, National Archives and Arlington National Cemetary, specifically the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Those attractions are what I enjoyed most during my stay last May.

Stay in Alexandria Va at the Hampton Inn on King St. It is a very short walk to the Metro (which you can take to go practically everywhere in DC). Also, Alexandria is a great place to hang out at night. It is safe, everything is in walking distance, and they have great restaurants(seafood, italian, indian, etc) and very nice, laid back, bars and shops.

As for attractions I like the Smithsonian American History museum, Air and Space Museum, and the Art museum. I also like the National Zoo. All can easily be reached from the Metro.

All suggestions so far are great, I can't stress enough to do Mount Vernon, do the river tour if possible.

You will not want to miss the 4th of July concert at the National Mall followed by fireworks at the Washington Monument.

Arlington national cemetery is a must see, Washington national cathedral is very good, and the air and space Museum at Dulles airport which is an extension of the Smithsonian museum on the national mall cannot be missed

In 2014 we stayed at the Hilton Arlington on Fairfax street. The Ballston Metro station is on the same bock, just walk out the door to get to it. It is the D line I think. I-66 is not far also. There are a variety of restaurants nearby.
We also stayed at Hilton Garden Inn on 14 St., between H & I street. You have to valet park there. This is probably more expensive, we used points I believe, but you don't have to deal with the train, except to save you some steps. And there are a lot of steps; it is a big place.
Those places are very good but the next time we go I think we will stay in Alexandria.
Other places that I don't think have been mentioned are the Spy Museum (it cost to get in) and the Capitol, specifically Statuary Hall. And the White House but I think you have to get passes for that. Georgetown is worth driving to and checking out if you have time.
I would learn about the city bus system; routes, fares, etc. Between that and the train you may be able to get around to see things and save you some walking. The train cost is based on how far you go. You buy a card, put money on it and use the card to enter and exit the station. The $ balance decreases depending on how far you go. You can add more $ to the card if needed. As far as I know they do not have a flat rate, multiple day option.
FYI, it is 2.2 miles, straight line, from the Capitol on one end of the mall to the Lincoln Memorial on the other end. It is about 1/4 miles across the mall.

A lot of great suggestions already given but one of my favorite places was The National Portrait Gallery.

Pentagon City is another great place to stay. Closer to DC than Alexandria and has a ton of shops, restaurants, and a mall. Crystal City is a little further south and has a massive group of restaurants.

Went back in September with SO.
Nationals Game.
Zoo. Also, good place Dukes Counter across the street is a great spot for lunch before going in.
National Archives (can be done in less then 1 hour).
National Portrait Gallery.
Roof top for drinks at the W.
Museums (American History and Air & Space were our two favorites).
Just a heads up, we learned the hard way that D.C. simply has too much stuff to do and it’s impossible to see it all. Enjoy.

Yeah, you have to prioritize.

We enjoyed the Newseum and Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Buy the Newseum tickets online to save a few bucks.

Stay at the Jefferson Hotel. It’s a little pricey but best hotel I’ve ever stayed at.
