Should I do this?
Which one?
Thanks

I've never been but I've heard Vienna is pretty nice......lots of cafes and live music everywhere......but they both are crazy expensive.

I wasn't too overly impressed with Vienna. Another historic bigger European city that is more expensive than Prague, Budapest, or Bucharest.
I think the landscape and western Austrian culture is a little more interesting, but that's just me.

Both. We loved Vienna but we were visiting friends that live there. Not sure how it would have been as tourists.

I personally love Vienna, great food and sites. But if you are younger and looking for nightlife, then it is probably not the place to go.
But to avoid travelling too much for your vacation, I would do Salzburg, then you could also hit Berchtesgaden, Chiemsee, etc on the way to Salzburg.
Oh, and if you love the Sound of Music like my wife, then Salzburg is your only choice.

Salzburg is a great city to do in a full day. Hohenstaufen Castle is right there in the Altstadt (Old City), and Mirabel Gardens is just on the other side of the Salzach river that cuts through the city. They have a couple of nice old churches in the downtown area as well. If you like beer Salzburg has two good places- Stiegl (very popar beer in Austria) and Augustinier, which is in a monastery and is beer-hall style with actual wooden keg tappings. There is also a cave bar which is actually built into one of the caves in the big hill where the castle sits.
TSOM tours are a big thing there but is primarily attended by Americans. Everyone else primarily goes for Mozart's birth house.
I believe Neuschwanstein (the Micky Mouse Castle) can also be on the way from Munich to Salzburg.
Vienna is a great city but would require more than a day to do a lot of things. They have a world-class art museum and the royal palace is a magnificent place to visit. Either way you can't go wrong, but if you are only budgeting one day I would do Salzburg over Vienna.

I would do Salzburg, which is an easy drive or train trip from Munich. You can also do the Eagle's Nest (get there early). Neuschwanstain is a hike from Salzburg but is in the general area.
Vienna is on the other side of the country.

Really depends on if you are driving or taking the train. If you are looking for city stuff Vienna is your answer. If you are looking for some time in the Alps Salzburg is the way to go. Berchtesgaden is well worth the trip, Innsbruck and numerous other cool towns are not far away.

Both amazing and beautiful cities, especially the views on the train from Munich to Vienna.
Vienna is overall much more to see and do, Salzburg is much closer to Munich.
Do both if you can.

Ha, I just looked at all points on a map and yeah, Neuschwanstein is much closer to Innsbruck than Salzburg. I remember taking a train from Salzburg and was able to go there and back in the same day, so I figured it had to be close.

OP did you mean Innsbruck or Salzburg? Because Vienna is WAAAY out of the way between Italy and Munich?
I've done the roundtrip flying into Munich and going to northern Italy and back twice.
Both Salzburg and Innsbruck you can do in 1 full day, 2 days if you want to do some side activities. There are a ton of fantastic side trips between in the Alps too. You also don't have to stay in the cities, you can hit the cities during the day and then stay the night in the Alps.
2 must do side trips:
Ice cave by Salzburg
neuschwanstein by Fussen
Eagles nest is also great.
Salt Caves
Tons of outdoor activites like whitewater rafting

Vienna is not exactly on the way....it’s the other side of Austria.
So I’d say Salzburg, simply because of proximity. It’s also a small city (town, really), with a slow pace, a few sights concentrated in a small area, and it is easily reached from Munich via train. Aside from the obvious (Mozart’s birthplace, the Sound of Music sights, the Stiegl brewery, the cathedral), there is a cool re-created waterwheel, hooked up to a working flour mill. The Stifsbackerei St Peter mills its own flour & uses a wood-fired oven to bake breads and cakes on certain days of the week. Plenty of local business, most tourists don’t know or notice it. But a really cool thing to see—it uses water from one of the historic water diversions through the city. See more here: LINK
Salzburg has a modern, efficient train station with a supermarket inside it.

Been to Salzburg twice and loved it. You can hit Salzburg, Neuschwanstain, and Hallstatt.
