We went 17 years ago after it recently opened and loved it. It was smaller then with only 28 rooms (individual "huts" with plunge pools and outdoor showers). I think they have added more connected rooms on one side of the site.
The suites were great with plenty of room and very nice bathrooms. It was called "Ikal de Mar" and was independent. First class service, butlers, coffee and pastries were left on terrace each morning, complimentary soft drinks and beer in minifridge, spa was very nice. Not sure what has changed but reviews are still positve. There are some comments about noisy hotels next door. There were none when we were there - only some very modest small houses right on the beach. When we checked in we were invited to a Quinceañero of one of the neighbors. The resort was concerned about the noise and all the hotel guests were invited. The hotel supplied cases of Herradura and beer. The family was so gracious and food was amazing. One of those travel stories that you remember. I guess the money offered for the property was too good for them to stay.
The one thing that you should know is that the rooms are on winding paths through the jungle from the front of the property to the beach. None are too far from the beachfront pool and restaurant but when we were there only the Presidential Suite had a beach view. The rooms and plunge pools are very private.
We have thought about going back recently, Amex has a free night offer through Fine Hotels as does Virtuoso.
