USING Guide to Iceland TOUR COMPANY
Any world travelers who have been to Iceland NOT use this company on their trip? I found it very hard to find any type of itinerary or tour in Iceland that did not circle back to this company. I imagine anyone thats been to Iceland has used them. What was your experience?

I am going for two weeks over Thanksgiving to catch the Northern Lights and they have numerous options of different tours that they've offered me. They even have self-drive tours where they send you the itinerary months before you go and take care of your accommodations ahead of time and you just go with the flow to each destination and finish at each different hotel every day.

The 10 day self-drive tour rather than the similar guided 10 day tour is about $2,000 cheaper and I imagine we would have a little more leeway in our travel plans if we drove ourselves too. Yet I'm a little worried about driving in the conditions at that time of year in Iceland to do the self-drive tour.

So question is anyone use this guided tour company before? I asked the company in my communications with them about having leeway during the guided tour and it felt like they were trying to sell me by telling me we should have time to do any extracurricular activities we wanted each day without missing the bus so to speak (even though the guided tour could have up to 15 additional passengers touring with you). Would you take the guided tour do a circle of the island or a self-drive tour keeping in mind the time of year?

Thanks

We did 7 days in Iceland this past November and did it self guided.

LINK

I saw those tour busses everywhere and I'm glad I didn't use one. we were able to go places at our own leisure and we weren't forced to leave from and go back to Reykjavik everyday.

A woman named Jeanne has a YouTube channel called life with a view and it has a ton of good information. She's an American but relocated to Iceland and put out an entire series on where to travel oh, what to bring, weather conditions, etc

Yeah I imagined you would see those tour busses everywhere with how many different booking options they offered. We would be be doing the circle of Iceland tour so wouldn’t be going to Reykjavik everyday but still see your point on the being forced from place to place. Thanks for the link... will check it out. Did you see the Northern Lights being there in November?

re: USING Guide to Iceland TOUR COMPANY
I spent 13 days in Iceland with a few friends. I went alllll over the country, way off the golden circle. Perhaps you’ll miss out on a couple things, but life is so much more enjoyable researching yourself and doing your own thing. It’s so much better. I cannot stress enough that you should research yourself, get your own car, and go. Driving in Iceland is not difficult and it’s so unique and amazing. Do it yourself. Perhaps it’ll be a little iffy in certain conditions, but just research. It’ll take hours and hours, but the reward is great.

Like displaced said.

We went last year, rented a car, and did everything ourselves. It was a much, much more enjoyable experience compared to sitting on a bus with a bunch of people on a set schedule.

Highly recommend you do some research and plan it yourself rather than go through a touring company.

I was there over Thanksgiving in 2017. I would highly recommend renting a car (small suv with 4wd) for the duration of the trip. We rented a small Land Rover and it worked out great.

Driving conditions varied but for the most part the roads were well maintained.

Do a self guide. My family is from there, so I know a little more when I go over, but its very easy to do yourself. EVERY one speaks english and is more than willing to help you if needed. Very friendly country.

One thing to consider, OP. Are you comfortable driving in the snow? Because I’m November that’s a possibility.

I drive in the snow all the time, but Iceland was a whole different animal. Granted I was there in February, but we hit a snowstorm with insane winds and I was white knuckling the steering wheel the entire drive.

We went in mid November. The roads were totally fine. Even the night it snowed, the Ring road was easily drivable.

Granted, we stayed on the southern coast.

We are thinking about going but heard its overly pricey and that the northern lights actually suck. It's basically a thin white cloud to the naked eye.

Go to see the beauty of the country. We didn't get to see the lights and still consider the trip a wild success.

It was expensive, but not excessively. I was expecting everything to be much more costly than it actually was.

Well whoever told you that is a certified retard. We saw BRIGHT BRIGHT greens and purple with some white thrown in as well. It lights up the night sky when you get a good showing.

I found roundtrip airfare + 4 nights of the best hostel in Reykjavik for $700... good luck going anywhere in the states for that price.

It's worth it.
