Flew out Dec 26th, 10:00 am flight to NYC.
Since it was the day after Xmas, I was expecting it to be crowded. We arrived an 1:45 minutes early. Let me say it went flawlessly! Traffic into airport, no problem! Parking garage spaces, plenty. Wife and I had TSA pre-check, no wait. 17 year old son and his friend did not, it took them a little over 10 minutes to get through security! Bathrooms ultra clean, selection of food, top notch!
Update: return flight from JFK today(Dec 28th), plane arrived on time, 3:00pm. Departed plane, 3:11. Had a checked bag on return trip, only. LSU game had just started, so we took our time getting to baggage claims. Waited approximately 5 minutes at the carousel for our bag. Headed to short term parking garage, Paid for parking at 4:03 pm, was in Natchez in 2 hrs 10 minutes! Great experience!

Here at MSY ON 27th. The entire baggage check and screening system is shut the frick down. Bags are stacked 20 deep at the check-in gates. They are telling travelers to bring their large checked bags through TSA and then to check them at the boarding gates.
A billion dollar NOLA disaster!

Airports having problems with baggage isn't limited to NOLA. A meteor could hit the airport and somehow it would be because its a NOLA thing.

that's true but I've been seeing online that MSY's baggage failures are fairly unprecedented.

Yep. Join the Cult of the Carry On Only and things like this won’t matter.

I've heard so many great and terrible reviews on MSY over the last two weeks I have no idea what to believe.
Flying to ATL tomorrow on Spirit, boarding at 10:30. Trying to decide how early to leave Lafayette.
Any advice?

I would leave at 7am.
I flew out of MSY in early December and it was probably the best experience I’ve had in a “larger” airport.

At the Southwest check-in counter alone, there were easily over 100 checked and tagged bags piled up against the counter where customers are supposed to be checking in. The conveyor belt moves about 3 feet every 10 minutes, the rest of the time, it is at a complete standstill. And there are hundreds more customers in line to add their bags to the pile.
In the TSA line, there is a pinheaded moron randomly opening and closing the retractable belt stanchions like he's playing some kind of real-life pacman game.
3 more guys in MSY uniforms hitting on the women coming into the checkpoint area.
Then a fire alarm went off that the travelers were told to ignore, while police and other staff tried to hold open the security doors that were trying to automatically lock.
Maybe that's not a NOLA thing to you. But it certainly seems typical to me.
