UPDATE: Glacier Natl Park temporarily closed to the public
quote:

As the need to slow the spread of coronavirus gains urgency in Montana, Gov. Steve Bullock has requested the immediate, temporary closure of Glacier National Park.

The governor made the request in a letter to Glacier Park Superintendent Jeff Mow on March 24, the same day that Department of Interior officials announced closures to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national park units for public-health reasons and to reduce strain on local resources and gateway communities.

quote:

“As a gateway community to Glacier National Park, I guarantee you the majority of visitors choose to spend at least a portion of their vacation in Whitefish, and right now we are overwhelmed,” Muhlfeld said. “Our emergency services are strapped, our bars and restaurants are closed, and we don’t need additional visitors taxing our infrastructure right now. We would prefer that the park be closed temporarily to visitors because it directly impacts us.” - Whitefish mayor John Muhfield

UPDATE:

quote:

Glacier National Park is closed to visitors until further notice as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Montana, which a day earlier recorded the first death of a patient stricken with coronavirus. According to a press release, the park’s closure goes into effect at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27.

re: UPDATE: Glacier Natl Park temporarily closed to the public
I happened to be in the Grand Canyon when they shut down all services. Everything was open when we hiked down. When we hiked up, everything was shut down. The only place open was the grocery store. You could drive in the park for free. It was like the park was abandoned. It was a bit surreal.

re: UPDATE: Glacier Natl Park temporarily closed to the public
Glacier remains in winter condition well into June and early July for the backcountry. The visitor center in Apgar, which has been on its winter schedule anyway, officially shut down last week until further notice. All winter education positions in the park have been halted as well.

The full park closure, if it goes into effect, will essentially gate off all entrances from vehicle entry. This is what they did with Yellowstone etc.

Do people really visit Glacier in March? Aren't the roads closed until June?

Sounds like a good time to do some backcountry hunting in new territory.

Good luck. The park will still be patrolled and they are starting to plow roads next week.

And if you’ve never been to the park in March, you won’t be getting far into the backcountry. There’s still 20 feet of snow at Logan Pass, and it ain’t backcountry.

Shutting down parks is one of the dumber things about this Corona bull shite. Name me a better place other than your own home to "social distance" than the outdoors?

There are millions of acres of national forests, BLM lands, etc to social distance. Places like Glacier and Yellowstone are affected heavily by winter conditions and there are only so many places one can wander before having to turn around and go back. And nobody comes to parks prepared anyway, so what are they going to do? Stare at a frozen lake?

Bingo. It's like everyone is trying to outdo each other in a morally smug kind of way. Thiis "social distancing" mania leading to closed venues may backfire as all people are forced into the same locations.

They even closed the little park down the street from my mom's house here in Bham, AL. Gyms, concerts, churches, I get it. An outdoor park? Come on man. Just another reason for city/state/county/federal employees not to work.

what is so hard to understand? The whole point is to not be around other people. These were taken around Piedmont park in atlanta 4 days ago

The "it's just an outdoor park!" attitude is fine until you have hundreds of people all doing it at once. It defeats the entire purpose. The parks in our city are still "open" for people to walk aroudn and use the trails but all structures (playgrounds, courts, buildings, restrooms, etc) are closed. As they should be

I am one of those and have worked from home just as much as in the office. I don't know how they do things in birmingham but in our city we are still expected to work since we're being paid.

This is great. Plenty of room for people to spread out and they seem to be doing so. Not sure what the problem is here?

National parks as a whole are pretty much many people’s way of social distancing.

Stupid.

Get a clue dude... glacier is very tightly confined in winter mode: there’s nowhere to go other than Lake McDonald or xc ski the road (only us locals do this anyway).

People that don’t live near parks don’t really understand, so I get being naive. Not to mention most parks are in pretty remote areas with limited medical resources, so if something happens to a dumb tourist not spending money in our area it takes away from the people who live here.

I spoke to national parks as a whole. Not just glacier. I’ve been to most of the ones in the desert.

That lake area looks pretty vast though.

I wouldn't consider myself an idiot nor dense. But I'm struggling to see the issue with people safely separated outdoors in an space that (presumably) has all the close contact areas closed.

i think the issue is this particular park, not all of them. like moab/arches/canyonlands, it has a small gateway town that supports visitors and it just can't handle the load right now. besides, most of the park is still under lots of snow. so this one i get.

i also get that the national forests here in arizona have closed large recreation sites and drive-in campgrounds that tend to attract lots of people. the forests themselves are still open (for now) but access is limited and the high-traffic areas closed.

now, if the park or forest service says it is illegal simply to be present on forest land (along a creek or hiking path) then i am right there with you. there are hikes and backcountry fly fishing trips that i do in some of the national forests here in arizona where i do not encounter a single soul. before the pandemic i visited these spots just to unwind and enjoy nature in solitude. if they enact that kind of shutdown (and i fully expect they will) i know i won't be the only one raising a stink.
