United Airlines frequent flyer miles - 70k required for 1 RT economy ticket

This may be a question for CuseTiger or VA Buckeye...
Trying to book RT tickets from IAH to CUN June 21-28 using miles. The flights I am trying to book WITH BASIC ECONOMY saying I must use 70k miles for ONE RT TICKET.
When did this become the norm? We booked 2 tickets with 70k miles last year. Maybe I should wait until Tuesday?
Seems crazy for an economy seat. TIA...

Are you looking at fare saver? Online deal portal?

I just looked it up and I'm seeing 17.5k miles or 35k roundtrip per person. Are you sure you don't have two people selected for travel?
ETA: I have Silver status with United. If I don't log in I see 25k miles each way for the non stop flights per person.
Do you have status with United and are you logged into your account before you price the flight? These are for the later in the day non stop flights. The earlier in the day non stops are showing as 27k miles per person each way.
That disclaimer is for the 17.5k miles flight.

They all went to dynamic pricing for mileage tickets a few years ago. I’ve paid 35k to go BTR-JAX round trip while I’ve also seen 52k MSY-SYD round trip.

That's a $300 flight. Even if you only valued miles at a penny apiece, you shouldn't spend more than 30k for the ticket.
Out of curiosity, how did you get the United miles?

That dynamic pricing is a horrible thing.

I work in Calgary but live in Houston. The past 9 weeks have been back and forth (fly there Monday morning and fly back Friday afternoon) so my miles have been racking up quickly.
@VA Buckeye - gold status. Sounds like I need to try again tomorrow. 70k I was like WTF?!

United actually really just got going with it. Kicking in full in November.
All copying Delta which is sad for this purpose.
AA will be soon. At least partner pricing is still stable for now.

Maybe consider crediting your flights to another Star Alliance carrier, such as Avianca Lifemiles or Air Canada Aeroplan, because United miles are just less valuable right now.
But when cash prices are cheap, that isn't the best time to use airline miles anyway. This is when something like some Capital One Venture miles would be handy.
But I know that credit card bonuses are not something that everyone wants to chase.

Never. You can get plenty RT flights to Europe for 60k RT. United usually has pretty good redemption value.

Got it. For some reason I thought UA and AA followed Delta soon after.
I'm still indifferent on the dynamic pricing. From a Delta FF perspective, the award chart sucked to begin with. I rarely use miles for last-minute travel these days so following SkyMiles flash sales has likely saved me some miles as to the previous charts.

Ya, it's just kinda lame that a regular Joe consumer has no transparency in what he "should" pay to get from A to B. It requires him to know the historical cost of that flight and figure out when the miles required hits near that level. Also, since there is no chart, there is no notice of when these points requirements will change at any time at the airline's whim, making redemption a potential moving target.
Unfortunately, we need a good recession for these kind of decisions to be rolled back. It's been a general slide down the last 5 years.

I’ve spent over $12k to acquire 70k miles and it barely gets me 1 economy seat RT Houston/Cabo.
First world problems I guess. If that’s how it goes than so be it. Feels like I’ve been living under a rock.

An entire cottage industry has blossomed out of gaming the system for cc points/airline miles and manufactured spending.
The trend of airlines devaluing points is only going to continue.

No,no, no. The main reason that devaluations are happening is that the economy is great and planes are relatively full. The economic basis of frequent flyer programs is airlines giving away seats that would otherwise be empty, and they don't have many empty seats right now.

We will be in PDC for a week and Isla for a week. VA Buckeye will be in Isla also at that time.
We are meeting up around the 27th I think. With you I think that makes 5 total posters there at the same time?
Let me know....
