I know there have been numerous topics on Turks and Caicos. But I do have an additional question. We are staying at Beaches over spring break. Are there any must dos off resort with kids age 12 & 4? Is it safe?

It’s as safe as any island.

No offense, but the is it safe question grinds me. Hundreds of thousands go to these islands yearly without incident.

Pretty safe.... snorkel the reef in front of Cafe Somewhere. Also Da Conch Shack is a fun place to eat.

da Conch Shack

You can bike around pretty good, that’ll burn off some kid energy.

T&C is pretty safe to me, always be aware of your surroundings especially in a foreign country.

We stayed off resort and rented a jeep. As with any travel, we take precaution to secure our belongings and avoid unsafe areas.

You are right about this, but it is still a legitimate questions. Some of these islands are much safer than others. And there are some that are dangerous, especially if you are talking about striking out outside the resorts.

We need to separate crime and danger here. The chances of being hurt or killed like an armed robbery, mugging, or murder are almost 0. Extremely unlikely.

Now if you go to one of the worse areas, the chance of something like theft can be decent no different than any area of the world with low income. If you rent a car make sure you lock up your belongings, don’t leave a ton of cash in open sight in your rental, that sort of thing. Don’t go walking down a sketchy looking street if you are a group of women.

Yep. Use common sense like you do at home and in most places you'll be fine.

98% of people aren't going anywhere more dangerous than NOLA.

Every Caribbean island has its issues and the Turks and Caicos are no exception in my opinion. While I would consider it one of the safer islands it's not without its problems. I would consider the area around Beaches to be very safe. The proverbial use common sense analogy plays here just like it does every other location. There are some sketchy areas on the island like the community around Bugaloos or Blue Hills Road where Da Conch Shack is. We never really had any incidents other than my 20-somethings getting a little bit hassled because they were white late at night walking home from a bar in Provo. A couple of rude comments thrown at them by a local but nothing major. Your kids are young and you won't have to deal with the issues of older children wanting to go out at night when you want to go to bed. I have never felt any concerns during the day for particularly going to lunch for example anywhere, including the areas mentioned above.

All in all I think you'll have a great trip and don't worry about any of this.

I'm shocked.

I know right. This was on the main strip in Provo. I think it points to two things to advise your kids/young adults when traveling on islands like this: there is a lot of poverty and be sensitive that while you're on vacation they aren't and some can be resentful. Second: nothing good happens late at night.

Provo is pretty well off in comparison to the majority of the other small Caribbean vacation islands.

Don't disagree with that at all. The poorer areas of the island tend to be around five cays and blue hills.

As noted we felt very safe there overall, particularly in the main tourist areas where the major hotels are.
