Travel Agent - Do people still use them?
I'm seriously considering using one to book our honeymoon. There are just so many options for all inclusives in the Caribbean.

It doesn't cost any more to use one than to not use one, but Trip Advisor or this board will probably give out a less biased, more educated info...

I use them. I used one for my Dominican Republic trip and about to use one for Disney. They don't cost you anything extra most of the time.

I haven't, but I've seen some examples where they may have access to hook you up to do something you may not be able to book on your own. Certain "behind the scenes" experiences and the like.

They'll recommend whichever Resort gives them the best commission

I like how people on this board join together to help people plan trips, it works out pretty well. Plus a lot of people here have been all over the world so it really helps to get some first hand suggestions. The travel board is your own personal travel agent

I have a cousin who is one and is excellent. She thinks of stuff most people would never. Especially with cruises.

This. They make their money somehow, I'm also not a big fan of someone else planning my vacation as they really push things they like and they think you will like.

Given that, as said they don't usually cost you anything and sometimes can find you better deals then you can find on your own.

they are still really big with Disney trips

We used one for our recent trip. They are very helpful with all the FAQs for Disney and helping with fastpass/dining reservations.

I use one just to book everything and manage it just in case anything goes wrong. I find the resort and do all of that myself and let her do the rest.

Only when they are offering deals like account credits or in room perks. Other than that I’d rather do it all myself and make changes when I want rather than calling someone else to do it.

Let’s say you see a flash sale on a Sunday and you can save some money with the newe rates/cost, good luck getting your travel agent to work that up for you on a Sunday afternoon.

re: Travel Agent - Do people still use them?
We've used one once: for our honeymoon.

First, it's the honeymoon. I didn't want to stress over the details. But second, it was little over my head. We were going to multiple cities throughout europe and needing to arrive in London but fly out of Rome with flights/trains in between all while staying at B&B-like, smaller hotels. I just didn't feel comfortable doing all that myself and making sure I was getting the best deal at the right places. And I was 23 about to get married and buy a house.

When traveling abroad or leaving continental USA I would definitely recommend one.

I own a travel agency that does quite well. Honeymoons and major groups are a majority of our business.

I usually go to the Caribbean two or three times per year and use one for every trip

If you’re going to multiple cities and are using different forms of transportation, an agent could be worth it

I don’t see how they are useful booking an all inclusive tbh

re: Travel Agent - Do people still use them?
Can’t say that I see any advantage to using a travel agent for trips abroad (esp to Europe). It’s too damn easy to book everything online, from airfare to hotels/AirB&B to train and ferry tickets. What, exactly, am I getting from a travel agent? Perhaps if I have a friendship with an agent who can recommend things he/she knows that I will particularly like, I can see some added value. But there’s no substitute for your own research and planning.

What benefit do you gain from booking with an agent? You’re definitely not getting the best deals on airfare or hotels.

(Aside for those who say a Disney agent is worth it: why is it so damn complicated to visit that place? There’s a thread a week on strategy for your WDW visit. My long trips abroad require less planning than some folks pour into “cracking” WDW.)

No one is going to reply or argue with you when you start off coming across as an a-hole. But I’ll give it a try.

I gave, what I think, is a legit reason to use an agent. Stressful, busy time before getting married, multiple cities requiring multiple types of transportation and hotels, arriving and departing from separate cities. All of this back in 2010. And while the internet was helpful back then, the guis and integration from most of the vendors wasn’t like it is today at all.

As for Disney, so much has to go into planning because that’s what you need these days if you want a less stressful trip and getting the most out of it. Some people don’t know where to start and no one to go to so they choose an agent. It doesn’t cost anything for you and you won’t be paying any more or less for the trip itself. You’d have to be very insecure to turn down help like that if you truly need it and if the happiness of you and your family depended on it.

airfare is airfare is airfare. Unless your agent is using a clearinghouse that uses charters. Then they have access to airfares and flights that you didnt even know existed.

In terms of hotels, they beat the online street price most of the time, and it isnt a trivial amount.

Let me just give a simple example about Europe. We had several groups in Europe during the volcano that shut down traffic across the pond. Instead of them staying in an Air BnB, we were able to get the whole group routed onto a cruise crossing back.

AGents can provide you with options and support you dont get yourself

re: Travel Agent - Do people still use them?
As said, I don't think there is anything wrong with them at all and they will always be around.

Plenty of people would prefer just to pick up the phone and tell their agent they have $xxxx amount to spend, find me a place in this place or that place for Y dates. Very easy, they'll pay for that.

Part of my enjoyment of going on vacation is the planning. I like the history, the culture, the food, and to look at all my options before I go. It would be more of a pain to use an agent and they would hate me. But I understand the appeal to others.
