Headed to San Diego this summer for a "Family Trip" (Youngest family member is 21).

Below is a rough list on ideas we have so far:

1.) Padres Game at Petco
2.) Bike Ride through Red Wood Forest (looking for recommendations)
3.) Afternoon at La Jolla
4.) Possibly Trip to the Zoo

Any advice on above items or any other recommendations?

TIA

Unless there is some local park, the closest redwoods to San Diego are located about 6 hours away in Sequoia.

ETA: are you referring to Balboa Park?

Are you a golfer? Torrey Pines is public, and although it is obviously expensive it's a rare time to get to play such a prestigious and high profile course.

I visited some buddies there over new years and we played there a week before a PGA event so they already had some grandstands up, it was an incredible experience even though I'm not very good at golf. The views were fantastic and I don't regret the price tag at all since it's almost certainly the only time I'll ever pay that much to golf anywhere again.

I lived there for 3 years.

The Zoo is fantastic for any age person with even a passing interest in animals or gardens.

Go over to Coronado and rent some bikes and explore the Island.

La Jolla cove is pretty with children's pool with seals.

I am willing to pay to play for sure, convincing the family is the harder part..

Yes, I was reading into Balboa park when I was thinking "Red Woods"

Possible trip to zoo? Should be mandatory trip to the zoo. It's really neat and should not be missed.

You can take a water taxi across bay to Coronado. Visit the Hotel Del Coronado. You do not have to stay there to access beach and eat at restaurants and you can walk through the hotel as well.

I would highly recommend going up to Cabrillo National Monument for the views of the Pacific and back into San Diego and take the kids down to the tidepools.

LaJolla - you can kayak the coves or just walk along the coast and check out the coves and sea lions, easy walk around that area. On your way to La Jolla or on your way back stop at the San Diego Glider Port for some incredible views.

Don't come in May or June. The marine layer is super thick during that time of year, sometimes it'll stay cloudy all day. Just something to keep in mind if you can ne flexible with your dates.

Been to SD four times for various conferences over the years.

The Gaslamp Quarter is near Petco Park and there are lots of restaurants and bars there. We ate at Donovan's Steak House and it was very good. They have free steak sandwiches around 4 pm on some week nights.

The GQ is near the huge convention center so you might want to check to see if there are any going on while you are there. I think ComicCon is in July and usually there is another big one in July as well. Could be crowded in the restaurants.

Embarcadero Marina Park is worth checking out especially if something is going on there. Seems like there were a lot of people flying kites, big kites, once when we were there.

Check out Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. I think that is a really neat place, lot of restaurants and shops. We went to an old mission once which is worth doing if you are interested in the history of the area.

Ocean Beach Park is cool also as is Balboa Park. Never made it to the zoo though.

SD has a good light rail system that you might find useful depending on where you stay.

I was there in July once and the weather was incredible, 72 for the highs and low humidity. One other time it rained some but they only get about 12 inches of rain a year.

I was coming to say that I’ve heard from many people to go to Temecula for the day. Over 30 wineries in and around town and it’s in the mountains

I’ve also heard to go do an afternoon in Rosarita, Mexico. Heard it’s very tourist friendly and you can eat like a king on the beach with lobster and such for under $50 a head with drinks. Wife and I considering going this summer

Can't go wrong with that! You will definitely enjoy Temecula.

"eat like a king on the beach with lobster and such for under $50 a head with drinks" is my kind of day!

If you are staying downtown, you can take the ferry to Coronado Island, and rent bikes. Eat ice cream, explore and eat lunch at Coronado Beach Hotel.
